MINI hopes to beat previous record set in 2009
Mini never shied away from setting records in the most dramatic way possible, and the company's next stunt hopes to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest parade of Minis. The rendezvous point for this record attempt will be the famous Mackinac Bridge in Michigan, where the official car count will take place. The organizers, Mini USA along with Mini of Grand Rapids, are hoping that at least 1,451 Minis will show up, to beat the previous record of 1,450.
The record attempt is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3. The organizers are hoping to beat a record set in 2009 in the UK by the London & Surrey Mini Owners Club. Arguably, it is even harder to round up Minis in Michigan than it is in Surrey, England, and we're not sure why the Surrey record from 2009 doesn't come with a big fat asterisk for home court advantage. After all, Skoda doesn't attempt to set such records in the parking lot of their own factory in Mlad? Boleslav as cars are coming off the line.

Mini has had a lot of success setting records not often attempted by other, more buttoned-down manufacturers. Back in 2008 the company managed to set a new world record for fitting the most people into a Mini Cooper, beating their previous record of 27 people. We won't describe the contortions that were required to set a new record with 28 people fitting inside a Mini, so we'll just report that this was indeed achieved. Of course, all involved were professional gymnasts, but the fact that 28 people managed to fit inside a Mini stands. Admittedly, it's hard to imagine Mini's parent company BMW attempting such a record. So next time some car-shopping friend of yours complains that they're unlikely to consider a Mini because of the snug interior, you can inform them of the exact maximum passenger capacity, perhaps making a little wager in case they laugh it off.
Mini's upcoming record attempt at the Mackinac Bridge won't be just a massive flash mob, as there is a whole schedule of events for Mini owners planned that day. Participating Mini owners will not only get lunch and a t-shirt for their entry fee, but will also receive passes to car contests and entrance to the Bayside Music Festival and fireworks planned for that day. Registration is currently open at www.minionthemack.com, and is $25 for adults and $10 for children from ages 6-12. More importantly, local law enforcement should be prepared to receive multiple calls from residents who will report hallucinating that every car they encountered that day was a Mini. Don't say we didn't warn you.
