Screven Co. pond emptied as dam breached, damages Ga. Hwy 17 ...

SCREVEN CO., GA (WTOC) -

Crews have already starting cleaning up in Screven County after a private pond washes away part of Ga. Highway 17 along with railroad tracks near Ogeechee Road. Despite the damage done, it was not as bad as crews anticipated.

?"We really thought it was going to wash the highway out here, we are really glad it didn't." said Herbert Jacobs Jr. whose family owns the pond.

Most of the highway remains intact but everything underneath the road was washed away after the dam breached late Saturday night. ?

?"We tried everything we knew to do but there was no way we could actually stop it once it started we couldn't stop it," said Jacobs. ?

Jacobs is still in disbelief; the view from his dock looks much different on Sunday than it did on Saturday.

"It took about three hours and it [the pond] was dry," said Jacobs.

His family built the pond in the 1970's as an irrigation system for the family farm. What once used to be his backyard has now rushed south across Ga. Highway 17, all the way to the Ogeechee River.

As crews begin cleaning and rebuilding the road, the family has rebuilding plans of their own.

"We have to have it back for them to irrigate out of for the crops and they plan on building back as quick as they can," said Jacobs.

He said his family depends on the pond for their livelihood and according to neighbors, it was the best pond in the area for recreation and fishing.

"Even this morning the guys in the ditch caught a bunch of fish," said Jacobs. ?

Thankful no one was injured, the Jacobs family is trying to make the best of the situation by planning a fish fry.
