GREENSBORO -- Hundreds of Greensboro homes are getting an energy efficiency makeover to help cut back on costs. It's part of Duke Energy's Residential Neighborhood Program and the savings can be significant.
"The summer as well as the winter, it increases sometimes triple the regular rate amount," said Christine Marshall, an applicant of the program.
Marshall is one of hundreds of homeowners in the Warnersville community who has qualified to receive energy assistance, free of cost.
"We have about 16 different energy efficiency measures and services that customers can receive," said Tasha Davis, program manager.
The tools include door sweeps that blow air flow in and out of the home, water heater wraps and a year's worth of air filters. The program is delivering the tools to communities where around 50 percent of residents qualify as low-income based on federal or state regulations.
The company explained, even if you don't qualify, you can still cash in on the savings.
"The cheapest energy you have is energy that you never spend," said Davis Montgomery, Duke Energy district manager. "Make sure that air conditioner is working great, the filter has been changed, the outdoor unit is clear of shrubs and bushes.
You can track your progress on the company's website.
"We will send you a little analysis once every couple of months to show you how you're doing compared to your neighbors or other homes like yours," said Montgomery.
Duke Energy will be installing the tools in the Greensboro neighborhood through August. The company said average savings can add up to 25 percent.
