India retain top spot in ODI rankings

Defending ICC Cricket World Cup champions India have retained their position as the number-one ranked ODI side after the annual update of the ICC ODI Rankings Table was announced on Friday.

The annual update was released after the tri-series in West Indies featuring the hosts, India and Sri Lanka, ended on Thursday. India won the tri-series by beating Sri Lanka in a thrilling finale by one wicket.

India, who recently won the ICC Champions Trophy, have been in the number-one position since February 2013, when they beat England 3-2 at home to regain the top place.

The updated table now reflects all ODI matches completed after 1 August 2010. All ODI matches played until the start of May 2014 will be added to this table, so that by May 2014, the ratings will be based on just under four years of results.

As a result, Australia and England have swapped places after the annual update.

Meanwhile, bowlers made the biggest impression in the latest ODI player rankings. Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath jumped 14 places to 11th, and his skipper Angelo Mathews moved up nine places to 13th in the bowling rankings.

The other bowlers to make an impact inside the top 20 were Kemar Roach in 17th (up by one) and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar in 20th (up by 29). Outside the top 20, Darren Sammy in 29th (up by nine), Ravi Rampaul in 30th (up by one),

The bowlers' table was still headed by West Indies' Sunil Narine, followed by Saeed Ajmal in second place and England's Steven Finn in third spot.

In the rankings for batsmen, ex-Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara moved up a place to fifth. Another former Sri Lanka captain, Mahela Jayawardene, moved back in the top 20 after he moved up three places to 18th.
