NEW YORK ? Held to no runs and three hits in eight innings by the New York Yankees, things looked bleak for the Orioles on Sunday afternoon. The great Mariano Rivera was coming into pitch the ninth inning, and he got the first out.
?
Then, things got exciting. Nick Markakis singled, and Adam Jones slammed an 0-1 pitch from Rivera to left field, and suddenly the lost weekend had a bright end.
?
The Orioles 2-1 win over the Yankees before 40,218 ended the Orioles? three-game losing streak, and prevented their fourth sweep.
?
Darren O?Day (5-0), who recorded two outs in the eighth, was the winner.
?
Jim Johnson recorded his 30th?save, pitching a perfect ninth.
?
For the second time this season, Hiroki Kuroda handcuffed them in the Bronx. He threw a five-hit shutout against the Orioles in April, and allowed just three hits in seven innings.
?
Jason Hammel continued his winless streak, which has now reached seven. Hammel??allowed one run on six hits in five innings. He hasn?t won since May 27, and during that time has lost four games and pitched to three no-decisions. The Orioles lost the first six of those games.
?
The Yankees scored their run in the second when Hammel walked Zoilo Almonte to lead off. Lyle Overbay singled him to third, and Almonte scored on Eduardo Nunez?s sacrifice fly.
?
The Orioles had three baserunners in the first six innings. Markakis, who had three hits, singled with two outs in the first, Matt Wieters doubled with one out in the second, and Markakis doubled leading off the fourth.

NOTES: Scott Feldman (0-0, 3.00) acquired from the Chicago Cubs last week, starts for the first time at home as an Oriole against the team he started his career with, Texas. The Rangers are starting Derek Holland (6-4, 3.13)
