Pub chefs could be saving up to 20% on refrigeration energy bills simply by checking the system, according to the Carbon Trust.

Energy bulbs: cut costs

Refrigeration typically accounts for up to 50% of energy costs for businesses, or even 70% for smaller venues with refrigerated cabinets.

A Carbon Trust guide sets out a number of low cost steps for businesses to cut their bills. It advises readers to buy high efficiency refrigerated display cabinets that are listed under the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA), which can use 30% less energy than a non-listed cabinet, use air tight cold rooms with good defrost control, recover the heat from refrigeration equipment to reduce boiler consumption by up to 30% and use a chiller manufactured for UK temperatures to save up to ?25,000 a year.

?Any business seeking to cut its costs should be looking at its energy bills and for many companies refrigeration accounts for a large part of those energy costs,? said Richard Rugg, director of delivery services.

?Savings of up to 20% are possible with simple no and low cost steps. If your business uses refrigeration, it?s an opportunity that?s too good to miss.?
