NEW YORK - News Corp. said Wednesday that company veteran Lawrence "Lon" Jacobs will leave his role as senior executive vp and group general counsel to pursue new opportunities and focus on his philantropic work.
The conglomerate didn't immediately name a successor for the close advisor of chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch. A spokesman said the company will consider internal and external candidates in its search for a replacement.
Jacobs, 56, joined News Corp. in 1996 as senior vp and deputy general counsel. In 2004, he was elevated to his current titles and appointed to the seven-member Office of the Chairman. He worked on the company's various acquisitions over the years, including that of MySpace and the Wall Street Journal, and was a key Murdoch confidant.
?I will always be grateful to Lon not only for his wise counsel, but for his key role in helping build News Corporation into one of the world?s largest and most successful diversified media companies,? said Murdoch. ?I know this was a difficult decision for him to make, but I understand his desire to try new challenges after more than 15 years of service to our company, to our board and to our stockholders.?
?Although it is never easy to choose the perfect time to leave, I am proud of what we have achieved and I have personally reached the point in my life where it seems appropriate, and exciting, to try something new," Jacobs said. "I will certainly focus on my continued philanthropic work, including efforts to expand educational opportunities to underserved communities.?
