Tommy Chong Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

Tommy Chong

Tommy Chong of the famed stoner duo Cheech and Chong, is fighting a battle with Prostate Cancer. Chong revealed his illness on CNN to host Don Lemon on Saturday night.? Tommy Chong is best known for his wild antics in the crazy stoner comedies that Cheech and Chong used to make.

Chong said in the interview that he was officially diagnosed about a month ago.? His current prognosis is pretty decent considering he is currently battling a ?Slow Stage One?.? Chong said he first noticed his symptoms when he was serving time at the Taft Correctional Institution.? He was sentenced at the time in California for illegally selling drug paraphernalia.

Chong says he is pretty sure his time in the Prison is what made his health go south.

When speaking of the Prison Tommy Chong said,

?The prison is built on toxic waste. I also got gout from the food there,?

Chong was doing an interview with CNN to talk about his positions on the legalization of marijuana.? Chong is a strong advocate for its use for medicinal as well as recreational use.? He plans on treating his illness with hemp oil, a form of marijuana.

Chong said,

?I?ve got prostate cancer, and I?m treating it with hemp oil, with cannabis. So [legalizing marijuana] means a lot more to me than just being able to smoke a joint without being arrested. So I know [the cancer] had nothing to do with cannabis. Cannabis is a cure.?

Chong said that he had been completely sober for more than three years and that is when he noticed his health problems getting worse.

Chong also said that he completely gave up smoking pot more than a year ago and only ingests hemp oil.? He says he only does it at night so he won?t be high all day.

Nintendo's Hideki Konno discusses the 3DS and the element of surprise

Image

As E3 was coming to a close, we sat down with one of the men responsible for Nintendo's 3DS, Hideki Konno. Konno's official title is manager / producer, but because he's involved at such a high level with both software and hardware development on the 3DS, our conversation covered quite the range of topics. When asked about the handheld's performance in the last year, he drew parallels to the success of the DS that preceded it and he hopes that the 3DS will experience a similar growth curve. Due to the mention of the DS, we inquired about the possibility of a larger 3DS. While Mr. Konno wasn't able to confirm plans for a super-sized version of the current-gen handheld, he did express his affinity for the DSi XL's increased real estate -- he finds the larger screen is much easier to gaze upon. You can draw your own conclusions as to exactly what that means. When chatting about mobile gaming, we asked about the impact of smartphones on the outfit's handheld. Konno offered that Nintendo prides itself on surprising gamers with new "compelling experiences" that handsets can't provide.

We asked if any of these new experiences would involve the integration of both 3DS and the Wii U, and Konno replied that he's confident about those explorations will take place in future. In fact, a version of the Smash Brothers series is currently being developed for both 3DS and Wii U simultaneously. He indicated that it would be hard to believe that the two versions being developed in parallel wouldn't provide some unique interactions between them and their respective platforms. Additionally, while it sounds like the Miiverse will only be available on Big N's next-gen console at launch, Mr. Konno communicated that -- depending out how well it's received -- we're likely see the social element brought to the mobile gaming arena, too.

Activists report heavy clashes in Syrian capital between rebels, troops

BEIRUT - Explosions echoed over Damascus on Friday as Syrian troops clashed with rebels in some of the heaviest fighting yet in the capital in the 15-month uprising against President Bashar Assad. Troops also unleashed a heavy assault to retake a rebel-held neighborhood in a central flashpoint city, blasting it with heavy bombardment.

Also Friday, U.N. observers entered a remote farming area where a massacre was reported this week, an activist said, a day after they were blocked from reaching it by troops and local residents and fired upon.

The fighting in Damascus erupted in the restive district of Kfar Souseh, where armed rebels are said to have taken part in a huge anti-government demonstration along with other protesters Thursday night. A witness who spoke on condition of anonymity for security concerns said explosions could be heard throughout central Damascus and that smoke could be seen rising from the area.

In the central city of Homs, one of the main battlegrounds of the uprising, regime troops were trying to advance into the opposition-held district of Khaldiyeh from three sides, battling with armed rebels trying to stop them, said Tarek Badrakhan, an activist based in the neighborhood speaking via Skype.

"This is the worst shelling we've had since the start of the revolution," he said. A shell could be heard exploding in the background as he spoke.

Shells were hitting the neighborhood at a rate of five to 10 a minute, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. "It seems they are trying to enter it today," it said.

The Observatory and another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, had no immediate word on casualties. Amateur videos posted online showed a small white plane, apparently a drone, flying over Homs.

Amateur videos showed missiles exploding into balls of flames in the crowded concrete jumble of homes, with thundering crashes that sent plumes of heavy gray smoke over Homs. The videos suggested the attack began at dawn, as birds chirped, roosters crowed, and the sun cast a yellow glow. In one video, the missiles came in rapid succession, four exploding in less than a minute.

Homs has been one of the hardest hit regions in Syria since the start of the uprising. In April, the U.N. said more than 9,000 people have been killed since the crisis began, but it has been unable to update its estimate since and the daily bloodshed has continued in past weeks. Activists put the number of dead at about 13,000.

The reported massacre this week took place in the nearby province of Hama, where about 80 people, including women and children, were shot or stabbed Wednesday in the small farming areas of Mazraat al-Qubair.

A group of U.N. observers entered the area on Friday, visiting a cemetery where some of the dead were buried and then continuing to the site of the killings, according to Leith Al-Hamwy, an activist in Mazraat al-Qubair.

A team that tried to reach the area on Thursday was blocked by troops and local residents and then fired on.

The reports of the killings there came in the wake of another mass killing in a string of villages known as Houla, where 100 people were killed last month. The opposition and the regime blamed each other for the Houla massacre.

As reports emerged about Mazraat al-Qubair, which would be the fourth such mass killing of civilians in Syria in the last two weeks, the United States condemned Assad, saying he has "doubled down on his brutality and duplicity."

The government denied responsibility. A government statement Thursday on the state-run news agency SANA said "an armed terrorist group committed an appalling crime" in Mazraat al-Qubair, killing nine women and children. It said residents appealed for protection from Hama authorities, who sent security forces who went to the farm, stormed a hideout of the group and clashed with its fighters.

In Geneva, International Committee of the Red Cross spokesman Hicham Hassan told reporters Friday that the humanitarian situation in Syria was worsening.

"Currently the situation is extremely tense, not only in Houla, not only in Hama, but in many, many places around the country," he said. He noted the countryside around the northern city of Idlib, suburbs of the capital Damascus, the eastern province of Deir el-Zour and the coastal region of Latakia had all seen attacks.

On Friday, troops fired tear gas and live ammunition in several locations across the country in an attempt to disperse thousands of anti-government protesters, activists said, including the northern provinces of Idlib and Aleppo, the southern region of Daraa and the suburbs of the capital, Damascus. There was no immediate word on casualties.

Syria's state-run media said armed "terrorist groups" attacked military units charged with protecting al-Omar oil field of al-Furat Oil Company in the oil-rich city of Deir Ezzor province. The official news agency SANA said several gunmen were killed in the Friday attack.

SANA also said a car bomb in the Damascus suburb of Qudsaya killed three policemen, while another explosion in the northern city of Idlib killed two soldiers and three civilians.

In Brussels, Kristalina Georgieva, European commissioner for humanitarian aid, said there are 1 million "vulnerable people who need humanitarian assistance" in Syria.

"Between 200,000 and 400,000 are internally displaced ... and we have 95,000 refugees in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan primarily," she said.

U.N. patrols in Syria have on several instances been deliberately targeted with heavy weapons, armor-piercing ammunition and a surveillance drone, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Security Council on Thursday, according to a senior U.N. official. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the council meeting was closed, said Ban also reported repeated incidents of firing close to U.N. patrols, apparently to get them to withdraw.

International envoy Kofi Annan, whose peace plan brokered in April has not been implemented, warned against allowing "mass killings to become part of everyday reality in Syria."

"If things do not change, the future is likely to be one of brutal repression, massacres, sectarian violence, and even all-out civil war," Annan told the U.N. General Assembly in New York. "All Syrians will lose."

U.N. diplomats said Annan was proposing that world powers and key regional players, including Iran, come up with a new strategy to end the 15-month conflict.

Student Challenge, Day 1: Cornell & Univ. of Houston Present Two ...

Starting off the day bright and early, two very talented student teams stepped up to the stage to present their spa concepts ? one from Cornell and the other from University of Houston.

?

Cornell Presents Mente Spa and Studio

?
Mente Spa and Studio is designed for customers who are turned off by traditional gym experience. Of the people the team surveyed, it was found that a majority had a hard time maintaining health and fitness goals; 50% of people with gym memberships quit within 6 months; obstacles prevent them from being consistent with physical activity; they feel uncomfortable in the traditional gym environment; and they wish the gym was a place to relax and unwind, and not a place to dread to go after work.

?
The proposed concept aims to inspire and engage the mind, and offer a place where guests can regularly engage in learning and development and address the need for a place to exercise for those who need to relax. This will be done through providing clean, serene space, where guests can experience a variety of movement classes and intellectual classes, set goals to achieve with personal trainers, experience the serenity of the spa, and attend to mind, body and spirit.

?
The target market is highly educated women ages 35-54, and a secondary market includes highly educated men and women ages 55 and older and 28 and older. Mente would be located in yoga active suburbs with a population of 50,000 and a median household income of $75,000.

?
Design aspects would create a world that values art, ideas and imagination, and guests could browse music books and art in retail, sit by the fire and have tea. Social interaction is encouraged, or for those seeking solace, a meditation lounge is available, where people can listen to guided recordings.

?
The Studio would provide workout and stretch equipment designed to instill a sense of play. Dance, tai chi, qi gong, yoga, guided stretch, and Pilates classes would be offered. Art and d?cor remind you that you?re not in an ordinary yoga studio, but a place that values and inspires the mind.

?
The second floor consists of a mind space, a private workout, and separate men?s and women?s locker rooms that feature stretching areas. The studio and the spa would be located on the same floor, separated with sound-proofed walls ? ?this would encourage fitness guests to be curious about the spa as they make their way to the studio,? the team said.
The spa would focus on massage treatments named after yoga concepts and poses, and guided meditation recordings would play during treatments in an effort to unite the mind, body, and soul experience, in addition to enforcing the spiritual and mental aspect of Mente.

?
The online aspect, which is included with membership, will offer guests access to videos of their favorite classes to take advantage of while traveling or on vacations.

?
Social and mental engagement sets Mente apart, the team said. The target guest is curious about engaging in discussions and learning about personal wellbeing. Marketing details and business plans were also provided.

?

?
University of Houston?s ModerNature Spa

?
Social. Spa. Lifestyle. Is the motto of the University of Houston?s ModerNature Spa concept. Inspired by the traditional healing nature of the Turkish hammam, slow beauty and the slow movement, the spa aims to provide a wellness experience that allows guests to integrate those components into their lifestyles and to encourage a social spa lifetsyle.

?
The proposed spa concept would make Austin, Texas, the home to its first location because Forbes named the city the fastest growing and healthiest city in the U.S. in 2011.
Signature treatments and design are inspired by the Turkish hammam, and movement classes, lifestyle therapies, and signature treatments? would work together for a complete mind, body, and spirit improvement.

?
On the operations end, this concept would put a strong emphasis in creating a sense of trust and team work amongst the employees. It would dedicate an entire floor to employees with an employee multifunction room and even an outdoor terrace. The team believes that if the employees are treated well, they will in turn provide a great level of service to the guests. Managers will provide training, team spirit, and ensure that the team is multi cultured to reflect a global presence.

?
The team also specified that it would implement a web-based management system using SpaBooker, as it fits their innovative concept through real-time booking and revenue management. The web-based system will also allow receptionists to use iPads to assist guests throughout the facility.

?
The target market for ModerNature is the middle income generation Y group middle income living in Austin, ages 25-45. Because cost is the main barrier between generation Y and the spa experience, ModerNature will offer competitive pricing, the team said. More specifically, because the team feels that social interaction is something lacking in the spa industry, ModerNature seeks to cater to the young professional woman looking for social healthy activity by offering a healing ritual for a healthy lifestyle.

?
Other notable design features include a salt wall located against the cold room. A warm room is located next to locker room so guests can sit down, relax, socialize and enjoy beverages before and after spa treatments. LEED certification will be sought after; rain water collection systems will be put in place, energy efficiency will be a priority through use of low- or zero-carbon energy systems. Air and wind barrier systems inside the building will circulate air and create natural environment, in addition to skylights and trees. Marketing details and a business plan was also provided.

?
As you can see, these teams have really thought out every component of creating a spa and wellness concept. We can?t wait to see what the next two teams have to present tomorrow!
