Local Cancer Boy Shares the Love | Daily Ridge

Blakey Appleton Is A Very Special Boy

Lake Wales, Florida ? Nine year old Blake Appleton became a local celebrity when he received a phone call from Tim Tebow in December. From the phone call to sitting in seats at Mile High Stadium, the only thing slowing him down is a diagnosis of terminal cancer. While Blake?s cancer does not have a definite diagnosis, it has the characteristics of three of the most deadly forms of brain cancer: AT/RT- Atypical Teratoid Thabdoid Tumor, Anaplastic Large Cell Medulloblastoma, and Anaplastic Large Cell Medullomyoblastoma.

Blake was diagnosed with brain cancer in January of 2008. He was given a 10% chance of survival but beat the odds and temporarily went into remission. When the cancer returned in his brain and spinal column in December of 2009, Blake underwent 30 rounds of radiation and received over 40 rounds of chemotherapy.

Through this difficult time, the Appleton family has been blessed with travel, toys, meet-n-greets and experiences they would never have been exposed to without the generosity and love of the community. Blake has done more in the last couple of years than most people do their entire lives! With limited healthy days, the family would like to see Blake?s smile as he blesses other children, just as he has been. Now with Hospice and given a 0% chance of survival, Blake?s family is pleased to know his infectious smile will forever shine through the Blake Appleton Foundation.

The non-profit foundation is pending 501(c)(3) approval and will help buy goodies for Blake?s hospitalized friends. On Tuesday afternoon, Blake, accompanied by his father, sister, directors of the Foundation and close family friends, will participate in the Foundation?s first shopping spree. Blake will spend the evening at Target, purchasing toys and games for the sick children of Arnold Palmer Hospital with funds sponsored by Mortgage Financial Group, Inc. and private donors. ?Blake knows what it is like to be sick and stuck in the hospital,? said Ryan Larson, Branch Manager and Loan Officer at Mortgage Financial Group. ?And who knows what a 9 year old likes better than another 9 year old? It?s humbling to be a part of something like this ? to be able to watch one child make another child?s day a little brighter.?

Because Blake?s health will not allow him to make the trip to Arnold Palmer Hospital the same day as the shopping spree, arrangements are being made to visit the hospital during a second outing.
