Working at Home While Pregnant and Raising a Toddler - Home Biz ...

by Sara Berthiaume | More from this Blogger

Today's topic is for the stay - at - home moms out there. If you started working at home after the arrival of your first little one, it is entirely possible that you may find yourself working from home and raising a young child while expecting your second child. That is where I am at right now. Our son is twenty seven months old, I work from home fifteen to twenty hours a week, and we are expecting a baby boy in the middle of April. My husband works outside of the home fifty hours a week, but if you include his commute it is more like sixty or so. If you are wondering whether the whole working from home and raising a toddler while pregnant thing can be done, my answer is that it is possible.

There are a couple of factors that have enabled me to keep working from home since we discovered that we were pregnant again. One is that I have been blessed with a healthy pregnancy, at least so far. I am not one to count my chickens before they hatch though, because I ended up on bed rest for the last month of my first pregnancy due to elevated blood pressure. I am thankful for each day that passes in good health. The other thing is that I keep my schedule realistic and do not take on more work than I know I can easily do. This has been hard because of course I would like to take on every bit of work that I can and make as much money as possible, but I know that some nights I get so tired that I have to just do what I can and then go to bed. In other words, I know better than to schedule myself into a position where maximum output is required at all times when I am working.

I have no idea how things are going to go once our new baby makes his appearance. Perhaps I am being naïve, optimistic, or both, but I feel like things will be okay. I have planned to cut back on my work (except for blogging) so that I can have time to adjust to the new situation and so that I can help my son adjust to having a baby brother. If I were expecting a baby for the first time, I may not feel as confident. However, having done the newborn thing once, I know that although having a newborn in the house is not always easy it does not last forever. My son taught me that, along with the fact that newborns do sleep plenty, just maybe not when you think that they ought to.

However it goes, I am sure that my adventures will be a good learning experience that I will be able to share with all of you. There seems to be very little information out there about how people manage to work at home with a newborn and a toddler. I am sure that it happens, and that some of you may want to make it happen, so my goal is to take my experience and share it as it happens.
