Organization:

The Swanee Hunt Family Office is organized to support Hunt Alternatives Fund; Ambassador Swanee Hunt?s activities relating to public policy, politics, philanthropy, education (including at Harvard?s Kennedy School of Government); other endeavors, including personal and household affairs; and The Free for All Concert Fund.

Hunt Alternatives Fund includes an operating foundation and a private grantmaking foundation that advance innovative and inclusive approaches to social change at the local, national, and global levels. The Fund combats the demand for modern-day slavery, supports leaders of diverse American social movements, advocates for the full inclusion of all stakeholders in peace and security processes around the world, inspires women to political leadership, strengthens youth arts organizations in eastern Massachusetts, and encourages an increase in women?s philanthropy.

Ambassador Hunt?s mission is to provoke social change regarding gender parity, especially as a means to end war and rebuild societies, as well as to end poverty and other human suffering. At Harvard, Ambassador Hunt is the Eleanor Roosevelt Lecturer in Public Policy, core faculty at the Center for Public Leadership, and adviser to the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, networking and educating academia in human trafficking and security issues. She serves as president and chair of Hunt Alternatives Fund as well as the Swanee Hunt Family Foundation.

This person primarily serves the communications needs of Hunt Alternatives Fund and its programs, and of Ambassador Hunt as they align with Fund communication objectives. Ambassador Hunt?s personal communications requirements represent a lesser but not insignificant responsibility. The incumbent will inspire and manage communications team efforts that are as forward-thinking in vision, goals, and strategies as we are in our programs.

Responsibilities:

General Communication Team Goals

1. Guide Swanee Hunt, program directors, and communications team members in the development of an overarching vision for communications efforts that will take us into the next decade
2. Establish/expand the brand and public image of the Fund and Fund programs and the leadership image of Swanee Hunt to advance the mission and goals of the Fund and maximize positive exposure in local, national, and global arenas
3. Support our advocacy work in educating those who create public policy (e.g., through the work of the Institute, Demand, Political Parity, or other Fund programs) and in creating audiences for our work (as in the Free for All Concert Fund) or engaging supporters
4. Support mainstreaming of our model(s) in a way that engages audiences (e.g., advocating for 1325 national action plans; scholarly reports to NATO or the EU that can be ?translated? to engage the attention of a broader audience)
5. Support Fund program development activities
6. Serve other outreach activities (events, partisan politics, Harvard/Swanee Hunt alliance)
7. Manage information overload; help make information meaningful

Specific Responsibilities
1. Complete the analysis of the current communications team structure, resources, and needs with staff currently involved; propose new structure and resources as required; proactively manage goals and strategies, staff, projects, and deliverables
2. Advise on new and ongoing communication efforts (media, writing, major speaking opportunities to build her professional brand, etc.) that promote Swanee Hunt?s philanthropic mission; including:

a. assessing new communication opportunities;
b. advising as to which team is best suited to respond; and
c. otherwise creating communication synergy around the president?s profile

3. Strategically leverage traditional and emerging media channels to support outreach efforts and impact; develop new communication tools, processes, and personnel resources as needed to effectively communicate Fund message(s) to key audiences; manage media relationships for optimal outreach, placement, and impact
4. Manage Swanee Hunt?s writing efforts
5. Identify and cultivate spokespersons for the Fund (e.g. executive director, program directors, etc.)
6. Offer strategic communications advice to partner organizations (Family Office, Free for All), grantees, and others
7. Manage day-to-day work of communications staff to ensure the timely and accurate production of all materials/projects (collateral, web sites, DVDs, board reports, etc.) from inception to publication, including review process

a. Develop work plans (including calendars, processes, and procedures) to facilitate the effective coordination, flow, and quality of communications work between communications team and other programs and within the communications team itself
b. Monitor workflow for communications staff, work with program directors to balance new requests for communications assistance with existing work plans; shift staff resources accordingly
c. Ensure that all work (printed collateral and published report, DVDs, web sites, etc.) is on message, consistent with our brand, and up to the highest professional standards ? from graphic design to packaging and writing
d. Oversee materials management: the collection, creation, and organization of a body of research and legacy materials (documents, photos, videos, web material); manage the archiving of such over time
e. Work closely with and utilize the expertise of the in-house Media Technology team in delivering communications products before engaging additional resources
f. Identify and manage freelance consultants (e.g. writers, production assistants, designers, etc.) as needed

8. Further integrate the communications process into the work plans of program staff

a. Maintain the Fund?s brand and messaging to ensure consistent and effective internal and external messaging and branding for programs, principals, and development efforts
b. Help develop, disseminate, and maintain high standards for branding and messaging; manage the training of staff in communications practices and writing
c. Adopt, convey, and adapt as necessary the Swanee Hunt ?voice?

9. Ensure the thorough review of communications materials before publication
10. Assist program directors in the creation of long-term strategic communication goals and strategies (including the on-going refinement of the communications team structure and functions)
11. With director of operations, develop and manage communications budget to implement cost savings and best practices
12. Enhance performance of communications team through coaching, and mentoring; develop individual plans for professional development

Qualifications:

? Proven successful experience in management of communications efforts for nonprofit organizations
? Creative vision
? Substantial experience across the communications spectrum, from the use of social media to print collateral and public relations
? Experience with communications, community outreach, and advocacy
? Excellent personnel and project management skills; experience managing diverse communication specialists, from writer, editor/writing coach to graphic designer and PR staff
? Strong team leader and team player
? Ability to prioritize own work and that of staff and attend to multiple assignments
? Strong problem-solving abilities, mature judgment
? Superb oral and written communications skills
? Sensitivity to multiple international and cultural nuances
? Assertive ?managing up? style
? Flexible; able to thrive in a fast-paced environment; contagious energy and enthusiasm
? Fluent in Microsoft OS, Word, Outlook, and strategic use of the Internet
