Local immigration lawyers predict mix of results from Supreme Court ...

Philip Smith

The U.S. Supreme Court?s recent ruling on Arizona?s controversial immigration law sends several messages and is likely to complicate things for Arizona in the coming months, according to a pair of Portland attorneys who specialize in the practice.

The court?s ruling, issued Monday, struck down most of Arizona?s law by stating that immigration statutes should be made at the federal level and not by states. The court let stand the component of the bill that is causing the greatest concern by allowing Arizona law enforcement officials to check a person?s immigration status while stopping them for other infractions if a ?reasonable suspicion? exists. The law?s opponents say this invites racial profiling.

Philip Smith, a partner with Nelson|Smith Immigration Law, says Oregon allows law enforcement officials to notify the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau if they have arrested someone whose status is questionable. The difference between Oregon and Arizona is that Oregon law enforcement cannot arrest someone simply because their status may be questionable.

?The ruling certainly highlights the need for Congress and the President to act to revamp the current immigration law because there is legitimate frustration among immigrants and states,? Smith says. ?The reason Arizona, Alabama and other states have gotten involved is because there is no movement at the federal level. I?m sure there are people who want Oregon to be more aggressive in enforcing immigration law here, so there is some legitimate frustration.?

Brent Renison, a partner at Parrilli Renison and chair-elect of the American Immigration Lawyers Association?s Oregon chapter, says he believes the ruling opens up a new can of worms for Arizona.

?I have family in Arizona and if I go there to visit and someone stops me, my Oregon driver?s license is not going to be sufficient proof of my immigration status. Only an Arizona driver?s license is, apparently. So I think some real disasters are going to start occurring,? he says.

Renison expects an upsurge in civil rights claims that will cost Arizona a significant amount of money to defend.

?It also chills people from reporting crimes because if an officer comes to interview somebody and then asks about their immigration status and wants to see their papers, nobody is going to want to report a crime,? he says.

Renison notes that the U.S. Justice Department swiftly posted a phone number for Arizona residents to call if they believe their civil rights have been violated due to the law.

?The Justice Department is going to be watching Arizona like a hawk, and that?s not good for Arizona,? he says.

Home Stored Product Entomology ? Electrical Bbq Grill ? Barbecues ...

Five major stored product pests
Flour Beetles (Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum)
Further information: Flour beetle
Red Flour Beetle
There are two different types of beetles classified as flour beetles: the red flour beetle and the confused flour beetle. Both are similar in physical characteristics. They are flat and oval in shape and usually range around 1/8- inch long. Their exoskeleton is reddish brown with a shiny and smooth texture. The eggs, larvae, and pupa resemble each other closely in physical features as well. The eggs usually tend to be a white color, or at times even colorless. They are very small in size and have a sticky outer covering that causes certain food particles to stick to it. The larvae have six legs, with two pointy projections toward the caudal end. Finally, the pupal stage (a cocoon-like form used to break itself down and emerge as a mature adult) is usually a white or brownish color. The beetle life cycle lasts approximately 3 years or more, with the larval stage ranging anywhere from 20 to over 100 days, and the pupal stage around 8 days. Beetles usually breed in damaged grain, grain dust, high-moisture wheat kernels and flour. The female flour beetle can lay between 300 and 400 eggs during her lifetime [a period of 5 to 8 months]. The flour beetles mainly infest grains, including, but not limited to: cereal, corn meal oats, rice, flour, and crackers. This type of beetle is the most abundant insect pest of flour mills across the United States. Their small size allows them to maneuver through cracks and crevices and get into the home and other areas. Once they are present in areas with potential food sources, they can infest material such as flour, resulting in a sharp odor or moldy flavor. The red flour beetle is able to fly short distances and the confused flour beetle is unable to fly. While the confused flour beetle is more commonly found in the northern United States, the red flour beetles are more predominant in the southern United States in areas with warmer climates.
Tribolium castaneum
The red flour beetle is considered the best organism to study genetics. A team composed of Susan Brown and Rob Denell, both biology professors at the University of Kansas, along with Richard Beeman, won financial support to have the beetle?s genome sequenced, marking it as one of the earliest sequenced insect genomes, as well as distinguishing the red flour beetle as the only pest insect to be analyzed in this way thus far. The project was funded partially by the US Department of Agriculture, as well as by the National Institutes of Health, and the genome sequencing was led by Stephen Richards at the Human Genome Sequencing Center, Baylor College of Medicine. The red flour beetle?s gene map information and genomic sequence are accessible from the National Center for Biotechnical Information. More information is to be published in Nature on 2008-03-27.
Drugstore Beetle (Stegobium paniceum)
Further information: Drugstore beetle
Drugstore Beetle
The biscuit beetle is closely related to the commonly known cigarette beetle. Adult drugstore beetles are shaped cylindrically with dimensions ranging from 2.25 to 3.5 mm. Their exoskeleton consists of a reddish brown coloring. These beetles are also characterized by elytra, sclerotized (hardened) wings that fold back over the abdomen and hinge upwards, allowing the hind wings to come out in order to fly. The presence of this striated appearance helps distinguish the drugstore beetle from a similar species, the cigarette beetle. Females are capable of laying up to 75 eggs during a life time. After the eggs are laid they move into a larval period that can range anywhere from 4 to 20 weeks. After the larval period, drugstore beetle larvae move out of the substrate to build a cocoon and pupate. The pupation process takes a total of 12-18 days. The entire life cycle of the drugstore beetle lasts approximately 2 months but can be as long as 7 months. Adult female beetles have a lifespan of about 13 to 65 days. These stored product pests will infest almost anything readily available. Food products prone to infestation include: flours, dry mixes, breads, cookies and other spices. Non-food material includes: wool, hair, leather and museum specimens. This specific type of beetle is able to produce symbiotic yeasts that produce B vitamins, which allow the beetle to survive on the consumption of poor nutritional foods. They are found in areas that have a warmer climate, yet are less plentiful among the tropics as their counterpart, the Cigarette beetle.
Sawtoothed Grain Beetle (Oryzaephilus surinamensis)
Further information: Sawtoothed grain beetle
Saw-toothed Grain Beetle
The sawtoothed grain beetle is closely related to the merchant grain beetle, and is commonly found in kitchen cabinets feeding on items such as cereal, breakfast foods, dried fruits, macaroni, crackers, etc. They are the most common grain and stored product pest. They are very active and tend to crawl rapidly while searching for food. They are small insects, reaching roughly around 1/8 of an inch. Their name originates from their distinguishable saw-tooth-like projections found on each side of the thorax. The body shape of the beetle is flat, slender, and brown in color. The size and shape of the mandibles allow the beetles to easily break through well sealed and packaged foods. An adult female sawtoothed grain beetle can lay anywhere between 45 to 250 eggs, that usually hatch within 3 to 17 days. The larvae look much different from the mature adult. They have a caterpillar-like appearance, with a yellowish coloration to the body and a brown head. The larval period can last as long as 10 weeks but can be as short as 2 weeks. Following the larval instars is the pupal period, which can last one to three weeks. The pupal stage is characterized by the unique process by which these beetles stick together pieces of food material to form a protective covering around their bodies. A fully mature adult beetle, under optimal conditions, can live a maximum of 4 years, a considerably long arthropod lifespan.
Indianmeal Moth (Plodia interpunctella)
Further information: Indianmeal moth
Indianmeal Moth
Indianmeal moths can infest a variety of foods found in the pantry. Coarsely ground grains, cereals, dried fruits, and herbs are common items the moths have been known to infest. They have also been found in animal food such adried dog food, dried fish food, and even bird seed. The adult moth is small; generally, their size averages about 3/8 inch, with a 5/8 inch wing span. As adults, the moths are easily identified by an overall grayish, dirty complexion. However, the wing tips have a bronze color that helps differentiate this particular moth from other household moths. The adults have a distinct forewing pattern as well. The pattern consists of a light-colored base with about two-thirds of the distal area a red to copper color. The larval stage, or caterpillar, is characterized by a pinkish or yellowish-green body color with a dark brown head. The larval stage of the moth life cycle is centered on food sources; during the last instar, these larvae are characterized by a movement towards a protected area to pupate. These caterpillars have the capacity to chew through plastic packaging and will often produce silk that loosely binds to food fragments. The pupal stage is generally observed as tiny cocoons that hang from the ceiling; these cocoons can also be found on walls, as well as near the food source. A female can lie over 200 eggs, and will usually die after this process because adults Indian meal moths do not eat.
Fruit Flies (Drosophila melanogaster)
Further information: Fruit fly
Fruit Fly
Fruit flies are found near ripened or fermenting fruit. Tomatoes, melons, squash, grapes and other perishable items brought in from the garden are a common cause of an indoor infestation. Fruit flies can also be attracted to rotting bananas, potatoes, onions and other unrefrigerated produce purchased at the grocery store and taken home. The body of the fruit fly is tan towards the front part of the body and black towards the rear. They usually have red eyes and are about 1/8 inch long. Females have the ability to lay over 500 eggs, usually in fermenting fruit as a food source. The only environment necessary for successful reproduction is a moist film and fermenting material. Generally, fruit flies are a problem during late summer and fall due to their attraction to ripening and fermenting fruits and vegetables. The entire life cycle can be completed in about a week. Unfortunately, because of their ability to fly in and out of the home through windows and screens, they have the capability of contaminating food with bacteria and disease-producing organisms.
Detection of an infestation
Careful observation is necessary when detecting the culprit of an insect infestation. Each of the five different insects discussed has a unique pattern of destruction. These observations are imperative, as there are not always larvae, pupa, or adults readily available for examination and identification. In the absence of physical specimens, conclusions can be drawn about the probable insect that is infesting the product just by noting the damage done to the particular food. By noting the type of food and the damage done, a nearly accurate conclusion can be drawn about the type of insect causing the damage, allowing a conjecture about the type of control needed. Having an insect specimen and accurately identifying it can lead to eradication, and ultimately, prevention.
Foods commonly infested include:
Whole or cracked grains (rice)
Flour, meal, or similar ground grain products
Spices
Cereals
Pasta
Candy
Powdered milk
Nuts (whole or

Motherhood and the Myth of Having it All | Toddler Times

6059789551 3e23fd2c98 Motherhood and the Myth of Having it AllSince I read Anne-Marie Slaughter?s piece Why Women Still Can?t Have it All last week I?ve been pondering the idea of what it means to truly ?have it all.?

I?m not new at this mommy gig. With a nine-year-old, an almost-five-year old, and a three-year-old, I?m in the trenches, so to speak, but I have a few years of parenting under my belt.

This adds up, roughly, to: 700 time outs, 4,000 spilled sippy cups, 20 car seat installations, and 1,456,792 poopy diapers.

Nevertheless, I know better than to say that I know what I?m doing.

We?ve been through a lot as a family. At least once a week I marvel at the fact that I?ve been able so far to keep the wheels on this bus moving forward and cling to my sanity at the same time. As a mom, I?ve worked full time and part time outside the home. For two years I was a stay-at-home mom with no job, and if you?d asked me back then I?d have told you it was going to stay that way. Then suddenly I found myself working again, very part-time teaching one night a week. And now I?m home full time but also working. Full time? Part time? I haven?t done the math.

All I know is this: in each of these arrangements I?ve failed to achieve it ?all.? If it exists, it has eluded me these past nine years. Here?s the thing, though. I?ve never gone out seeking ?it all.? It?s a myth, like the American Dream or the perfect bra or a brand of nonfat ranch dressing that still tastes good.

There is no such thing as ?it all.?

In Slaughter?s article she describes leaving her position at the State Department in search of that elusive work-family balance, her ?desire to be with my family and my conclusion that juggling high-level government work with the needs of two teenage boys was not possible.?

I?ve never been a high-level government official. I?ve never even been a low-level government official. Come to think of it, I?ve never been any kind of official (unless you count that time I got to hold the flag at the Girl Scouts regional meeting in 5th grade) but do have an understanding about what it means to work hard and do the best by your family at the same time. I don?t think this is an issue that we can isolate to the ranks of the power elite. I know women who work in insurance offices and hospitals and in elementary school libraries who struggle with these same issues.

Across the country there are clerks at Dollar Generals and cashiers at Krogers who fight the rough waters of work and home harmony and who go under every day.

We?re not doing women any favors by promoting this myth that it?s possible to ?have it all.? Can someone please tell me what that even means? My suspicion is that the headline of the article (which was a fascinating and well-written and thought-provoking read) was intended to bait women into another tussle in the Mommy Wars. The cover photo on the issue of The Atlantic in which the article appears depicts a toddler in a briefcase like a cast-off file folder, a minor inconvenience, or the working woman?s latest must-have accessory.

I?ve yet to meet a working mom who regards her child in that way.

I?d be happy if we could stop promoting myths like ?having it all? as a mom because it ends up making us all feel like failures if we don?t measure up. For me, though, for now, a forward-moving bus driven by a mother who?s clinging to her sanity is the best I can do.

I?m not in pursuit of ?having it all,? and maybe that?s why I?m happy with what I have.

HBT: Youkilis trade may not be imminent

It?s well past noon and we haven?t checked in on the Kevin Youkilis rumor mill. Time to rectify that.

CSNNE.com?s Sean McAdam has the goods:

Five teams ? the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and a fifth unidentified team ? are evolving.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks, a second source revealed, while once involved in talks for the infielder, are no longer part of the mix.

FOX Sports? Ken Rosenthal tweeted?late Saturday night that the Dodgers were only engaging in ?minimal contact? with the Boston front office. He also called the Indians a ?longshot.? So we might be able to go ahead and rule out those two teams as well.

Youkilis is in the Red Sox starting lineup on Sunday against the Braves, batting sixth and playing third base. Will Middlebrooks ? the sudden star who has rendered Youk expendable ? is serving as Boston?s DH.

NJ airport fire having ripple effect on US flights

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Violent thunderstorms along the East Coast and a fire at an airport technical center in southern New Jersey combined to wreak havoc on flights around the country Friday night, leading one airline executive to tweet that "it will not be a pretty evening."

The fire started at a little after noon at the William J. Hughes Technical Center at Atlantic City International Airport and forced the evacuation of 1,600 people who work at the complex, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The agency said the fire made some traffic flow systems unavailable, though it said the fire didn't affect systems used to directly control air traffic. Traffic flow was moved to a backup system and performed manually during the transfer, the FAA said.

The system chiefly affected by the fire is used to automatically implement "ground stops" and "ground delays" ? orders air traffic controllers may give to hold certain aircraft on the ground at airports instead of allowing them to take off as scheduled, or to delay their departure.

For example, if bad weather is causing a backup of planes trying to land at Northeast airports, FAA might order planes in Miami or Dallas or on the West Coast to hold on the ground until the backup is reduced. Since the fire disrupted the system that automatically implements grounds stops and delays, FAA personnel were calling airlines and air traffic control facilities around the country to issue the orders.

Rob Maruster, JetBlue's chief operating officer, tweeted Friday, "It will not be a pretty evening, unfortunately."

JetBlue had 66 flights that had either been delayed or canceled Friday evening, but that number was expected to grow into Saturday, said airline spokeswoman Jenny Dervin.

"That's not a final number by any means," she said.

Dervin attributed about half the JetBlue delays and cancellation to intense thunderstorms in the East and the other half to the FAA technical center fire.

For example, the fire disrupted some tower operations and flight management systems like metering ? the automated arrival rate of aircraft into New York-area airports ? which reduces the efficiency of airports and causes flights to back up, she said.

"It's back-office support functions, but when it goes down ? especially in bad weather ? it just compounds the problem," Dervin said.

Flight delays at New York City's three major airports ? LaGuardia, JFK and Newark Liberty ? ranged from 80 minutes to 2? hours Friday evening, while delays at Boston's Logan Airport were averaging more than an hour and 45 minutes. Severe thunderstorms swept through the area in the late afternoon, carrying 60 mph winds and dropping as much as 5 inches of rain in some parts of New Jersey.

In Atlanta, John Crenshaw, 46, had hoped to be in Britain in time to watch the Boodles, an exhibition tennis tournament in Buckinghamshire this weekend but was delayed on the tarmac at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Friday because of the fire in Atlantic City.

"I was supposed to go Atlanta to Boston and Boston to London, but we were still on the runway," he told AP by phone from the airport, where he was waiting to board a Delta direct flight to London's Heathrow Airport that later left.

He said his initial flight never took off and that as it taxied back to the gate, the pilot announced "there was an FAA computer problem and that it was the most widespread one since 9/11."

Though he won't be able to make the Boodles ? "That's $350 bucks down the drain," he said ? Crenshaw did not despair, since he'll be in London by Saturday regardless.

"I'm going to Wimbledon," he said. "I have center court tickets on Tuesday so that's all that matters. As long as I am there by Tuesday, I guess all is not lost."

90-year-old helps chase down her alleged mugger

A man, disgusted by the crime he witnessed, teams up with the 90-year-old victim to chase down the man who mugged her. KNTV's Jodi Hernandez reports.

By msnbc.com and wire reports

An elderly woman in California teamed up with a Good Samaritan Monday to track down and nab her alleged?mugger.

The 90-year-old woman stopped at an Oakland, Calif., gas station to ask for directions when a man outside the store attacked her on her way in.

?I just thought it was the most horrible crime,? witness Robb Revelli told NBC Bay Area.

Store surveillance cameras captured the attack and showed the man tackling and robbing the five-foot-tall, 88-pound woman before fleeing the scene on foot.

Revelli, who had gone into the store to buy a drink, helped the unnamed victim collect her credit cards after he noticed the attack outside and then stepped into action.

?I asked her if she wanted to go to the hospital or chase this guy, and she wanted to chase him, so if she was down, I was down to go get him. And we did.?

The two jumped into woman?s car and caught up to the man. Revelli got out and grabbed him?as the woman called 911 from the car.

?[I] started jumping fences after him and caught him and got him in a headlock and held him there for the police,? Revelli said. ?[The woman] was my partner; she was really into the chase with me. She was not scared at all.?

When police arrived, they arrested the suspect, who is currently behind bars facing robbery charges.

?What I really appreciate is the citizen coming to the aid of the 90-year-old lady for her safety,? Doug Keely of the Oakland Police Department told NBC Bay Area. ?We are concerned when you?re chasing suspects into backyards and things like that. We really want you to be safe.?

?It?s not a great neighborhood, but if people just chipped in a little bit, it?d be so much easier to catch all the violence in my neighborhood right now,? Revelli said.

The victim is at home in California?s Central Valley with a severely bruised hip, but she said she?s incredibly grateful Revelli was there to help.

?He?s an excellent, wonderful fellow,? she told NBC Bay Area. ?I hope God protects him and blesses him for the rest of his life.?

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: Need ...

Dear Love77,

?

Thank you so much for reaching out to our online community! It sounds like you are in a rough spot! My heart aches for the place you find yourself in. Let me offer some hope and encouragement for you!

?

Often times when our marriages are in turmoil it is easy to look back and make excuses as to why you should have never gotten married (ex..we were too young, etc). Right now, your communication with your husband is not working, and sounds borderline abusive. It is normal for you not to have hope for your marriage and to be frustrated and hurt by your husband. This results in other men around you looking like knights in shining armor ready to sweep in and save you. However, be careful not to fall in the devil's snare! You need to remember spending 13yr of marriage with another person may lead to similar places! You cannot compare one to the other! Allowing yourself to consider new, easier, nicer options, sabotages your ability to be willing to do the work to repair and be successful in your current marriage! The truth is you Are still married! Until you resolve the issues with your husband, you are not free to even be considering another relationship!

?

My encouragement is to put mr. knight in shining armor on hold and cut all communication until you resolve things with your husband. Then focus on proactively working with a licensed Christian counselor who can help you communicate with your husband and hold him accountable for his choices. It is important that both of you learn to communicate safely with each other, and be safe with each other. The emotional abuse you describe should not be tolerated! A licensed Christian counselor can help you learn to be safe, and communicate safely. As you do, it will force your husband to either be willing to do the work of being married and treating you with respect, or he will choose to abandon the marriage (which is outside of your control). But don't expect him to be willing to work on things when you are dabbling with the idea of another relationship!

North Wales News: Energy minister ?positive? about Wylfa B

NUCLEAR cash will pay to boost the economic fortunes of Anglesey while the Energy Minister told workers he remained ?positive? that Wylfa B will happen.

In March RWE and E.on scrapped their ?8bn investment plans for Wylfa B sparking fears the planned 5,000 construction jobs and up to 1,000 permanent roles would never materialise.

Since then the German power giants have been seeking a new buyer with support from the Welsh and UK Governments.

Yesterday Energy minister Charles Hendry arrived on the island to speak to nuclear workers at Wylfa and announce a new ?480,000 funding package for the Anglesey Energy Island Programme (EIP).

This money from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority will train up young people for energy sector jobs, support inward investment and supply chain opportunities, and help pay for energy related infrastructure.

On Wylfa B, he told the Daily Post: ?We are very positive about new buyers being found for a new nuclear plant on Anglesey.

?There have been significant expressions of interest in the site, which is an exceptional site.

?I told workers that I understood their disappointment at the withdrawal of the RWE and E.on but assured them that the Government was doing all it could to encourage new investment.?

He added: ?The new funding will enable the Council to invest in education, skills, and infrastructure, and boost the local economy. These will allow young people to go for the jobs of the future.?

During his day-long visit to Anglesey Mr Hendry also addressed students at Coleg Menai?s Energy Centre and met officials from the Energy Island Programme, Horizon Nuclear Power, Magnox Limited and EnergySolutions.

Anglesey council leader cllr Bryan Owen said: ?It?s fitting that the Energy Minister should make his statement here on Anglesey as ? in Wylfa ? we have one of the best new nuclear build sites in Europe. I?m also delighted to hear about the new NDA funding which will allow us to develop a number of key EIP work streams.?

Cllr Owen added: ?During his visit, the Minister saw first hand the many positives Anglesey has to offer in relation to new nuclear build ? both in terms of the excellent skills set which already exists amongst the Wylfa workforce and how we?re investing in our young people through Coleg Menai?s Energy Centre, which provides training that will help them find work in future major energy developments.?

NDA Director of Stakeholder Relations, Jon Phillips, added: ?The Energy Island Programme has delivered excellent progress over the past three years and we are delighted to maintain our support with this latest grant, which we hope will make an important contribution to unlocking future economic activity and to building a sustainable future for Anglesey.?

Friday Illusion: How a cheetah can hide its spots

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

Be careful if you're walking in the jungle: what may seem like moving spots could actually be a cheetah. Now new animations by Stuart Anstis and his team from the University of California in San Diego illustrate the effect by showing how our brain can interpret a moving scene in different ways.

The video starts with couples gazing into each others' eyes. As they rotate, you are likely to keep seeing four distinct couples as we are primed to recognise male-female pairs. However, in the next clip, where faces are replaced with dots in a similar arrangement, what initially appear to be groups of rotating dots will probably soon turn into two floating squares. A third animation demonstrates that by adding more pairs of dots, the motion of the whole takes over as most people will see two pulsing octagons. A final clip shows that linking the pairs of dots makes the smaller groupings stick out from the overall formation.

These animations demonstrate that our brain can favour either the overall shape or its components depending on the arrangement. In many cases, we can perceive a scene in different ways and alternate between the configurations. However, Anstis and his team showed that over time, our brain usually favours one arrangement over the other by remembering how it has previously processed information in the scene.

Typically, we see the motion of the smaller groupings first before perceiving an overarching shape. "In our view, the grouping of moving spots into local motion clusters is an early, fast, pre-attentive event, while grouping them into global motion clusters is a slower, high-level process," write Anstis and colleagues.? "Reverting to the cheetah example, it is a modest visual achievement to group some of the moving spots locally into legs or a tail, but a prey's actions and survival will ultimately depend on organizing them globally into a whole cheetah."

If you enjoyed this post, see how an artificial shadow can trick your brain or watch how an animated Pac-man can create phantom shapes.?

Facebook CTO to leave in first senior-level exit

By Reuters

Facebook Inc's chief technology officer, Bret Taylor, is departing "sometime this summer" to start his own company, in the first exit of a high-profile executive since the social networking company's IPO on May 18.?

In an announcement on his Facebook page verified by a company spokesman, Taylor said he will be starting up a new company with Kevin Gibbs, a senior Google Inc engineer, according to his Facebook profile.?

The news was first reported by AllThingsD.?

"While a transition like this is never easy, I'm extremely confident in the teams and leadership we have in place," Taylor said on his page. "I'm very proud of our recent accomplishments in our platform and mobile products, from Open Graph and App Center to Facebook Camera and our iOS integration. I'm even more excited for the world to see all the amazing things these teams have coming."?

Facebook girds for battle over investor lawsuits?

Some investors had speculated that Facebook would have trouble holding onto key talent following its IPO, which created many millionaires among its ranks.?

Facebook executive Mike Vernal will take over the platform division, one of Taylor's key jobs. Cory Ondrejka will take over mobile, a source familiar with the situation confirmed.?

"I've really enjoyed working with Bret and getting to know him as a friend and teammate," said Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg in a statement. ?

Facebook goes all-out to prove its ads work?

"I'm grateful for all he has done for Facebook and I'm proud of what he and his teams have built. I'm also proud that we have a culture where great entrepreneurs like Bret join us and have such a big impact."?

Many high-profile Facebook executives have left the company since its founding in 2004, including Taylor's predecessor as CTO, Dustin Moskovitz. He left Facebook in 2008 with his colleague Jason Rosenstein to form a social-networking company for business called Asana.?

Moskovitz, a onetime Harvard roommate of Zuckerberg, had been with the company since its earliest days.?

Another former roommate of Zuckerberg's, Chris Hughes, also left a few years ago and coordinated online organizing for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. Now, he is publisher of the New Republic magazine.?

Nasdaq faces years of litigation over botched IPO?

Dave Morin, who joined Facebook in 2008, left in 2010 to found another social network, Path. Facebook alumni Adam D'Angelo and Charlie Cheever left in 2009 to start Quora, their question-and-answer company.?

Matt Cohler, who joined Facebook from LinkedIn early in 2005, joined venture capital firm Benchmark Capital in 2008. His investments there include Asana and Quora.?

Chris Kelly, Facebook's chief privacy officer, left in 2010 to run unsuccessfully for attorney general of California.?

Facebook shares closed at $30.01 on Friday, up 1.7 percent.?

Bishop Fellay has two-hour meeting with CDF officials in Rome ...

Bishop Bernard Fellay, leader of the Society of St Pius X (CNS photo/Paul Haring)

Bishop Bernard Fellay, superior general of the Society of St Pius X (SSPX), met for more than two hours with officials of the Vatican?s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith yesterday.

The Vatican did not immediately issue a statement on the meeting, part of ongoing talks aimed at reconciling the breakaway group with the Catholic Church. The society?s founder, the late French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, who rejected some teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the modernising reforms instituted in its wake, was excommunicated for ordaining Bishop Fellay and three other bishops without papal permission in 1988.

In April, Bishop Fellay submitted to the Vatican his second official response to a ?doctrinal preamble? outlining what the Vatican said were ?some doctrinal principles and criteria for the interpretation of Catholic doctrine necessary to guarantee fidelity? to the formal teaching of the Church, presumably including the teachings of the Second Vatican Council.

The bishop?s reply was studied by the cardinal-members of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and, ultimately, by Pope Benedict XVI.

The cardinals and the Pope had studied Bishop Fellay?s first response, which was submitted in January, and later issued a statement saying his position ?is not sufficient to overcome the doctrinal problems that are at the basis of the fracture between the Holy See and the society?.

While Bishop Fellay has been generally positive about the possibility of reconciliation with Rome, leaked letters show that the society?s three other bishops have had serious reservations about the process.

In May Fr Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, said: ?In consideration of the positions taken by the three other bishops of the Society of St. Pius, their situation will have to be treated separately and individually? from the effort to reconcile with the SSPX as a whole and with Bishop Fellay.

?It is not that this is a process that necessarily will reach a solution that embraces all the positions? found among all the SSPX members, Fr Lombardi said.

Pope Benedict?s latest efforts to bring about reconciliation with the traditionalist group began when he lifted the excommunications incurred by Bishop Fellay and the other SSPX bishops after they were ordained without papal permission. The Pope also established a Vatican committee for doctrinal talks with society representatives in 2009 and drafted the ?doctrinal preamble? to explain the ?minimal, essential? elements on which the society would have to agree for full reconciliation, Father Lombardi had said.

When the Vatican?s doctrinal discussions with the society began in 2009, both sides said the key issues to be discussed included the concept of tradition in general, as well as the Second Vatican Council?s teaching on the liturgy, the unity of the Church, ecumenism, interreligious dialogue and religious freedom.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The dozen Washingtonians who will decide Roger Clemens' fate heard a day of closing arguments stuffed with attention-getting sound bites. The eight women and four men who mostly care little about baseball then began deliberations Tuesday that will impact one of the most successful pitchers of his generation ? and, in a way, the criminal pursuit of athletes accused of illegal doping.

"You," prosecutor Gil Guerrero told the jurors, "are the final umpires here."

They heard a clever line about Clemens being "a Cy Young baseball player" but not "a Cy Young witness." They heard the key witness called "a flawed man" who produced evidence from a "magic beer can." There were asked to debate whether it's "outrageous" that Clemens was charged in the first place, or whether it's a byproduct from Congress' "authority to protect the nation's youth."

Having digested the competing spins on 26 days of testimony by 46 witnesses, the jury met for some 15 minutes before being excused for the day at 5 p.m. They will reconvene Wednesday afternoon, then unless they reach a quick verdict, take off until Monday because of a long-scheduled out-of-town business trip by the judge.

Clemens is charged with perjury, making false statements and obstructing Congress when he testified at a deposition and at a nationally-televised hearing in February 2008. The heart of the charges center on his repeated denials that he used steroids and human growth hormone.

Clemens' chief accuser was his longtime strength coach, Brian McNamee, who spent more than a week on the stand and testified that he injected Clemens with both substances. But also essentially on trial was Congress' right to hold the hearings in the first place, and Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin spent part of his closing statement appealing to the notion that the U.S. government was way out of line.

"What's happened in this case," Hardin said, "is a horrible, horrible overreach by the government and everyone involved."

Prosecutor Gil Guerrero argued that Congress had the right to care because major league baseball players are role models.

"They influence children. They influence kids. Congress has to be involved with that," Guerrero said in a packed federal courtroom that included Clemens' wife and four sons. "Congress has the authority to protect the nation's youth."

It's a debate that's timely following a pair of expensive Justice Department drugs-in-sports investigations that bore little fruit. More than seven years of probing yielded a guilty verdict on only one count of obstruction of justice last year against baseball's all-time home run leader, Barry Bonds. A two-year, multicontinent investigation of cyclist Lance Armstrong was recently closed with no charges brought.

The case against Clemens was far from tidy, relying heavily on a witness who carried a lot of personal baggage and physical evidence that sat for years inside a beer can. McNamee was the only person who testified to firsthand knowledge of Clemens using the drugs in question. McNamee said he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and with HGH in 2000. He also said he saved the needle and other waste from a 2001 steroids injection of Clemens and stored it in and around a Miller Lite can and put it in a FedEx box. Some of the waste was shown to have Clemens' DNA and steroids on it.

Clemens' lawyers spent much of the trial attacking McNamee's credibility and integrity. McNamee acknowledged that details of his own story changed over the years, but he said that was partly because he initially tried to protect Clemens as much as possible.

"Saying that Brian McNamee lies zero times," Hardin said, "is kind of like calling the Grand Canyon a ditch."

Hardin produced a chart titled: "Brian McNamee's testimony is admittedly not credible." It listed more than two dozen times in which Hardin said McNamee either lied outright or said something that resulted from a "mistake" or "bad memory."

Guerrero readily conceded that McNamee is a "flawed man."

"We're not asking you to even like him," Guerrero said. "Brian McNamee did a lot of things that aren't nice, and we know that."

But, the prosecutor argued, that made McNamee the ideal partner for Clemens' alleged use of steroids and HGH, substances that Clemens wouldn't be able to receive from, say, a team doctor or head athletic trainer.

"Brian McNamee," Guerrero said, "would do whatever Roger Clemens wanted."

Clemens' lawyers repeatedly referred to the beer can evidence as "garbage" and did so again Tuesday. Hardin alleged the medical waste was manipulated by McNamee and contaminated by the way it was stored. Clemens lawyer Michael Attanasio also wondered how the "magic beer can" ended up containing waste from injections of other players.

"There's no doubt," Attanasio said, "the medical garbage is garbage."

But, the government argued, that only goes to show that McNamee didn't conjure up the evidence as part of some attempt to frame Clemens.

"If McNamee was trying to fabricate this evidence," Guerrero said, "don't you think he would have done a better job of it?"

When they left the courtroom to begin deliberations, the jurors were handed a complex verdict sheet that includes 13 Clemens statements that are alleged to have obstructed Congress. Hardin voiced outrage that the jury was being asked to make Clemens a convicted felon over some of the statements, including whether the pitcher was at teammate Jose Canseco's house on the day of a pool party in June 1998, an event the government called a "benchmark" days before McNamee's first injection of Clemens. McNamee said he saw Clemens talking with Canseco, who jurors heard was a steroids user.

"This is outrageous!" yelled Hardin, his face reddening as he pounded the podium three times.

Clemens said at his deposition that he wasn't at Canseco's house on the day of the party, but evidence at the trial showed that he was. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton has said he had some concerns as to whether the party was relevant to the case. Either way, Hardin said some of Clemens' wayward statements to Congress simply came from a man trying his best to remember and shouldn't be a reason to return a guilty verdict.

"He's a Cy Young baseball player," Hardin said in reference to the award for pitching prowess. "Not a Cy Young witness. ... He's a human being just like everyone else in here."

The two sides disputed the validity of testimony of the two wives in the case. Debbie Clemens said McNamee injected her with HGH in her master bathroom in Houston without her husband's knowledge. McNamee said Roger Clemens was present for the shot.

Eileen McNamee confirmed parts of her husband's testimony: She said he told her at the time he was saving the medical waste for his own protection. But she contradicted other parts, including his assertion that he saved the beer can evidence to keep her from nagging him about being a possible fall guy in a steroids investigation.

Prosecutor Courtney Saleski said Eileen McNamee's motives are in question because the couple is going through a contentious divorce.

"Eileen McNamee," Saleski said, "is in self-protection mode."

Highlighting the scope of the FBI's investigation of Clemens, Hardin produced a map that showed the government conducting 235 interviews with 179 people involving 93 federal agents or officers ? all in the name of trying to find more evidence that Clemens used steroids and HGH.

"Not one single blankety-blank piece of evidence after all of this effort. ... Not one single bit of evidence for 4 1/2 years of anybody other than Brian McNamee connecting Roger Clemens to steroids and HGH," Hardin said. "My God, if you're going to go to this kind of effort to prove this man lied to Congress, you'd better come home with some kind of bacon."

After Hardin's presentation, Clemens and the attorney embraced for several seconds, with Clemens patting the lawyer's back four times. Attanasio hugged Debbie Clemens a few feet away. Clemens, 49, walked down the hallway with his four sons in tow, one of the sons draping his arm around his father.

While the judge and jury will decide whether Clemens is guilty and goes to jail, the outcome will be irrelevant for many fans who've already decided that he cheated to maintain his success late in his career. Clemens himself told Congress at the 2008 hearing that "no matter what we discuss here today, I'm never going to have my named restored."

Hardin used that theme to take another dig at McNamee.

"This man's life and reputation," said Hardin, pointing at Clemens, "has been totally trashed because of Brian McNamee."

Chong said he first noticed his symptoms when he was serving time at the Taft Correctional Institution.? He was sentenced at the time in California for illegally selling drug paraphernalia.

Chong says he is pretty sure his time in the Prison is what made his health go south.

When speaking of the Prison Tommy Chong said,

?The prison is built on toxic waste. I also got gout from the food there,?

Chong was doing an interview with CNN to talk about his positions on the legalization of marijuana.? Chong is a strong advocate for its use for medicinal as well as recreational use.? He plans on treating his illness with hemp oil, a form of marijuana.

Chong said,

?I?ve got prostate cancer, and I?m treating it with hemp oil, with cannabis. So [legalizing marijuana] means a lot more to me than just being able to smoke a joint without being arrested. So I know [the cancer] had nothing to do with cannabis. Cannabis is a cure.?

Chong said that he had been completely sober for more than three years and that is when he noticed his health problems getting worse.

Chong also said that he completely gave up smoking pot more than a year ago and only ingests hemp oil.? He says he only does it at night so he won?t be high all day.

Nintendo's Hideki Konno discusses the 3DS and the element of surprise

Image

As E3 was coming to a close, we sat down with one of the men responsible for Nintendo's 3DS, Hideki Konno. Konno's official title is manager / producer, but because he's involved at such a high level with both software and hardware development on the 3DS, our conversation covered quite the range of topics. When asked about the handheld's performance in the last year, he drew parallels to the success of the DS that preceded it and he hopes that the 3DS will experience a similar growth curve. Due to the mention of the DS, we inquired about the possibility of a larger 3DS. While Mr. Konno wasn't able to confirm plans for a super-sized version of the current-gen handheld, he did express his affinity for the DSi XL's increased real estate -- he finds the larger screen is much easier to gaze upon. You can draw your own conclusions as to exactly what that means. When chatting about mobile gaming, we asked about the impact of smartphones on the outfit's handheld. Konno offered that Nintendo prides itself on surprising gamers with new "compelling experiences" that handsets can't provide.

We asked if any of these new experiences would involve the integration of both 3DS and the Wii U, and Konno replied that he's confident about those explorations will take place in future. In fact, a version of the Smash Brothers series is currently being developed for both 3DS and Wii U simultaneously. He indicated that it would be hard to believe that the two versions being developed in parallel wouldn't provide some unique interactions between them and their respective platforms. Additionally, while it sounds like the Miiverse will only be available on Big N's next-gen console at launch, Mr. Konno communicated that -- depending out how well it's received -- we're likely see the social element brought to the mobile gaming arena, too.
