Green price war breaks out to spark interest in ... - Automotive News

Despite a new round of deals on plug-in hybrids and electric cars, battery-powered light vehicles will remain a slender slice of the U.S. auto market, analysts say.

DETROIT (Bloomberg) -- As the auto industry struggled to recover from the recession, it swore off the deep discounting that destroyed profits and led to disaster.

Now, a price war has erupted in the industry's smallest segment: electric cars.

General Motors' $5,000 price cut this week on the Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric vehicle came in response to rapid-fire discounting on battery-powered models this year.

It began with Nissan Motor Co. slicing $6,400 off the sticker of its Leaf electric car in January, followed by price cuts from Ford Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. on their EVs.

That left GM's Volt alone atop the price ladder for mainstream plug-in electrics.

Volt sales sagged 3 percent last month and its almost $40,000 sticker price made for a bad comparison on Internet searches of competitors such as the $25,010 Toyota Prius.

So GM cut the price to $34,995 on a model on which it already loses money.

"It's a competitive nightmare out there, so you have to play within the realm of what others are doing," said Jeff Schuster, a Troy, Mich.-based analyst with researcher LMC Automotive. "The industry has gotten away from price wars in mass use, but in this area, it's alive and well. You have to play the game."

Pricing threat

Detroit has been worried the price-war game will play on a grander stage ever since the yen began plunging last year. That 18 percent drop since October, encouraged by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, enables Japanese automakers to reduce prices while protecting profits.

Nissan has cut prices on seven models in the United States, while Toyota Motor Corp. is offering no-interest auto loans and earned a record quarterly profit of $5.7 billion, the most ever by a nonfinancial Japanese company.

So far, the green-car price war amounts to more of a skirmish than an all-out assault because sales of the battery powered cars are so small.

Even with all the deals on these high-tech marvels, battery-powered cars will remain a slender slice of the U.S. auto market, according to LMC.

Pure electric vehicles, such as the Leaf and Tesla Motors Inc.'s Model S, will remain less than 1 percent of the market in 2020, while plug-in models like the Volt and Ford Fusion Energi will command just 2 percent of the market by then, LMC forecast yesterday.

Gasoline-electric hybrids, such as the Prius, will grow to 5 percent in seven years from 3 percent now, Schuster said.

Government encouragement

Automakers are pouring billions into developing alternative-powered vehicles in a quest to meet a federal mandate to achieve average fuel economy of 54.5 miles (88 kilometers) per gallon by 2025.

California, which sets its own vehicle-emissions rules, has a goal of electric, plug-in and hydrogen-powered cars reaching 15 percent of new-auto purchases by 2025.

Nine states, including New York, adopted their own version of California's rules.

"Government policies can't force consumers to buy something they don't want to buy," said Bailey Wood, senior director for legislative affairs for the National Automobile Dealers Association in McLean, Virginia.

President Barack Obama has predicted there would be 1 million electric cars on the road by 2015, based in part on research by Alan Baum, an independent auto analyst in West Bloomfield, Mich.

"It's certainly not going to occur," Baum said. "We're looking at '17 or '18 on that and that's dependent on a whole lot of other things, like the pricing, the availability and the technology."

Cost hurdle

The high cost of alternative-powered vehicles is the biggest roadblock to consumer acceptance, Baum said.

Even with the big price cuts and federal tax credits of as much as $7,500, electric cars and hybrids are still thousands more than comparably sized gasoline-powered cars.

"The key selling point of electric vehicles is you're going to save money at the pump," said Alec Gutierrez, an auto analyst for researcher Kelley Blue Book. "So when you have a sticker price starting at $35,000 or $40,000 in the case of the Volt, they just don't present themselves as a tremendous value."

It can take as much as 12 years to achieve the payoff on the premium for an electric vehicle, LMC calculates.

"That's just far too long," Schuster said. "There's no question that price has to come down in order to get more momentum and more interest in the vehicles."

Volt sales

Momentum has been hard to come by for the Volt, a model GM touted as a game changer when it was lobbying for what became a $50 billion bailout to finance its 2009 bankruptcy reorganization.

GM CEO Dan Akerson predicted global sales of 60,000 Volts in 2012, yet the company managed to move only about half that many, including 23,461 in the United States.

The Volt's design aimed to alleviate the anxieties electric cars invoke in car buyers.

It can run about 38 miles on battery power before a small internal combustion engine kicks in.

That gives the Volt a driving range of more than 300 miles, just like a regular car. No running out of juice on the way home.

That novel approach won the Volt accolades such as being voted the 2011 North American Car of the Year by journalists.

Consumers have remained cool to the car, buying only when GM piled on the incentives, as it did in June, when discounts totaling $6,195 helped boost sales by 53 percent.

Development costs

GM had been loath to reduce the Volt's price because the car cost so much to produce.

There is about $9,000 in research and development costs in each Volt, compared to about $1,200 in the average automobile, according to Sean McAlinden, chief economist with the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor.

"You can't make money that way," McAlinden said.

Akerson said GM expects to reduce the cost of the next generation Volt coming in 2015 or 2016 by $10,000.

"We know we have to reduce costs," Akerson said during an interview in April. "We've got to look at smart ways at getting it better positioned from a price perspective and that means we've got to take cost out of it."

Making money on the Volt would help Akerson's push to improve GM's profit margins.

GM's profit margin of 4.1 percent in 2012 trailed Toyota's 4.3 percent from its most-recent fiscal year and Ford's 4.2 percent in 2012. Honda and Nissan both fell shy of the 4 percent profitability mark, at 3.7 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively.

Minimal damage

Because GM sells so few Volts, its impact on the company's profit margin will be muted.

Last month's Volt total of 1,788 was close to the average number of Chevy Silverado pickups GM sold in a single day in July.

"The good thing about the Volt and the bad thing about the Volt is that the volumes are low," said Anthony Pratt, director of forecasting for the Americas at auto researcher R.L. Polk & Co. "If they have to concede on price and lose money on every one, the amount of the revenue lost based on incentives won't be as significant as a higher volume" vehicle.

The paucity of sales caused GM Chief Economist Mustafa Mohatarem to dismiss talk of a price war in the electric-car market.

"You're trying to build a market for this technology; that's all you're seeing," Mohatarem said this week. "People are trying to figure out, 'Where is the demand for this technology?'"

One unintended consequence of GM's Volt price cut: It could annoy the car's small and loyal owner base, which already paid the stiffer sticker price.

"The price reduction is a great incentive for anyone who's on the fence about it," said Isaac Cuevas, a Los Angeles entertainment executive, who bought a Volt in December. "Had I known, I probably would have waited."

CBS, Time Warner Cable trade barbs on day seven of blackout

By Liana B. Baker

(Reuters) - A CBS Corp executive said on Thursday that negotiations with Time Warner Cable Inc have "gone badly off course" and accused the cable company of trying to negotiate terms that would limit CBS's ability to do business with such online TV services as Netflix Inc and Amazon.com Inc.

The comments, made at a New York City hearing on Thursday, came on the seventh day of a blackout that has deprived more than 3 million Time Warner Cable customers from watching CBS stations in large U.S. markets including New York and Los Angeles.

Despite the war of words, both companies confirmed on Thursday that they are negotiating again.

If the two companies fail to strike an agreement by Sunday, Time Warner Cable customers in the affected cities will miss golf's PGA Championship, the final tournament of the four major golf events this year.

Rory Whelan, Time Warner Cable's regional vice president of government relations, in testimony at the same hearing, accused CBS of "coercive bundling practices" and said CBS's blocking of Time Warner Cable's Internet content exhibits conduct "beyond the pale." Testimony from both executives was provided to Reuters by the companies.

Martin Franks, an executive vice president at CBS, said Time Warner Cable has been insisting on securing the same terms and conditions of their last agreement which started in 2008 and expired in June. He said Time Warner Cable is asking for terms that would supply it with some CBS content for free, which online players such as Netflix pay "millions of dollars to distribute."

"Perhaps their real aim here is to use those outdated terms to hamstring our ability to do business with Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus and other new entrants that pose a new competitive threat to their former, cozy, unchallenged monopoly status," Franks said.

He added that "CBS is not going to become Time Warner Cable's accomplice in trying to throttle those new services," referring to companies such as Netflix and Amazon.

Time Warner Cable said at the hearing that it had proposed two options for it to resume carrying CBS, which were both rejected by the broadcaster. Earlier this week, Time Warner Cable's chief executive, Glenn Britt, made a proposal to CBS CEO Leslie Moonves to sell CBS as a single channel, rather than part of a package, a move Moonves dismissed as an empty gesture.

Time Warner Cable also said in its testimony on Thursday that it offered a new proposal for CBS to carry its signal temporarily until the two companies can hash out a new deal. It said that CBS refused the offer, and that it hopes the broadcaster reconsiders.

Aereo Inc, the online television venture backed by Barry Diller, said on Thursday it was expanding service to Dallas, one of the cities affected by the blackout.

Aereo is controversial within the industry because it pays no licensing fees to broadcasters. The TV industry is concerned that Aereo, which allows subscribers to live-stream broadcasts of TV channels, could threaten the traditional business model.

Spa Weekend: Proven Aromatherapy Techniques to Try Out

The essential oils of many plants have medicinal effects when inhaled or applied to the skin. You may be skeptical of the idea of aromatherapy, but with the right products and the right scents, you can treat many common ailments ? or simply treat yourself ? with a spa day this weekend!

Spa Weekend Aromatherapy cover Spa Weekend: Proven Aromatherapy Techniques to Try Out

The Basics

The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) defines aromatherapy as ?the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize, and promote the health of body, mind, and spirit.? Sounds pretty great, right?

Before you experiment with aromatherapy, there are a few safety points to keep in mind. First of all, never use pure essential oils directly on your skin without first diluting them, as they may cause skin irritation. Not all oils are safe on skin; if you want to use an aromatherapy product topically, test it on a small patch of skin first. Pregnant or nursing women should consult their doctor before trying aromatherapy (it?s best to play it safe and avoid it altogether while pregnant). Never swallow these oils, and keep them away from eyes and mucous membranes. Some oils are not safe for children (especially those with allergies), so save your spa day for when you have a little ?me time.?

chamomile Spa Weekend: Proven Aromatherapy Techniques to Try Out

To create your own aromatherapy products, simply buy unscented lotion, bubble bath, shower gel ? whatever you want to use ? then find a local shop that sells pure essential oils (your best bet is a natural foods store or health store). Buy the oils that will be most beneficial to you based on the list below. When you get home, dilute the essential oils into your unscented bath products. For a jar of lotion, add about 5 drops of essential oil; for a bottle of shower gel, add about 20 drops. You can also add 5-10 drops of the oil straight into your bath, or place a few drops on a tissue and inhale. Create a body mist by placing 5 drops of essential oil per 4 ounces of water in a spray bottle.

Some oils will come pre-mixed (for example, a mixture of eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemon for cold and flu relief). Based on your needs, you might choose a mixture like this. Compare prices and product descriptions when shopping; you want 100% pure essential oil, not ?fragrance oil? or ?perfume oil.? Aura Cacia is a trustworthy brand of essential oils and aromatherapy products that can be found locally.

Pure essential oils will generally cost $10-20 for a 0.5oz bottle. However, due to the varying degrees of difficulty extracting the oils from different plant species, prices will range a good bit. Blended oils, which are essential oils diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil, provide a cheaper alternative to the pure essential oils, plus they?re ready to use as body oil.

Lavender Spa Weekend: Proven Aromatherapy Techniques to Try Out

Which Aromas Should I Use?

If you want to relax?use lavender. The most commonly-used essential oil, lavender is helpful in treating everything from depression to bee stings. A recent study indicated that women who smelled lavender for just 10 minutes had decreased emotional symptoms associated with PMS. Lavender can also be used as a topical treatment for skin inflammation (bug bites, burns, acne). Lemon, chamomile, orange, and neroli are other scents that have a relaxing therapeutic effect.

If you need energy?use peppermint or eucalyptus. These stimulating scents will give you a natural pick-me-up ? put down that energy drink!

If you can?t sleep?try chamomile. Here?s a creative idea: place a few drops of chamomile on a small towel or tissue, then place it inside your pillowcase for a scent to soothe you to sleep.

If you want to boost metabolism?use fennel or ginger.

If you?re feeling down?cinnamon, clary sage, and lemon have uplifting scents. Quick ? if you?re about to cry, put a few drops into a cup of boiling water and inhale?ahhh. Feel better?

If you?re in pain?try peppermint or ginger (which is especially useful for headaches).

If you?re congested?try eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon, or a blend of these.

If you want to treat skin problems?try tea tree oil. Its antimicrobial properties make it a popular acne treatment, but you might also use it for warts and bug bites. Add 10 drops of tea tree oil to hot water and soak a towel, then place the warm towel on the affected skin.

Trying aromatherapy at home is fun and effective. If you do buy pure essential oils, remember: a little goes a long way, and safety comes first. If you want to learn more, there is a whole world of resources online and at bookstores. Certain Whole Foods locations even have free ?Aromatherapy 101? talks in their body department from time to time.

Happy spa day!

DSGMC Officials protest outside Italian Embassy in New Delhi [August 07, 2013]

According to a news reported by YesPunjab.Com, a news portal by senior Punjab journalist H. S. Bawa, [t]he security officials at the airport demanded the delegates to remove their turban in a private room one by one in order to remove or they can?t board.

?Considering the principles and preaching?s of Sikh Religion, the delegates refused to remove their respective turban and were offloaded by Emirates Airlines due to non-boarding? YesPunjab.Com news reads further.

According to YesPunjab.Com: [t]he security officer said to the delegates ?you have to remove your hat and individually go one by one in a private room where the entire physical frisking will take place by removing it? the delegates termed his statement as unethical word for the Sikh Dastar (Turban), which is the pride of Sikh Religion and refused to remove the same.

?The Embassy of India in Rome intervened with the local officials and airport administration at the highest level but their efforts were unsuccessful. The Ambassador of India in Rome was personally monitoring the situation?, the news reads further.

As per information when the news reached Delhi (India), the general secretary of DSGMC Manjinder Singh (irsa along with other office bearers Ravinder Singh Khurana and Harmeet Singh (Kalka) approached Italian Embassy in New Delhi to lodge their protest.

?Later in the day a large number of Sikhs staged protest outside the Embassy and raised the slogans against the incident and submitted a memorandum to the embassy officials?, YesPunjab.Com has reported.

As per information the high ranking DSGMC Delegation was on their way to Dubai after attending ?International Sikh Dastar (Turban) Awareness Day? at the invitation of Sikh Channel (UK) on 3rd of August of 2013 at Luna Park, Cremona Italy. It?s prudent to mention here than more than 5000 persons all across from Europe attended this event.

The delegation was later scheduled to meet the Indian Community in Dubai and visit Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Dubai. The Embassy of Italy in New Delhi and The Embassy of India in Rome were well informed about the visit of this delegation to Italy.

The delegation is currently waiting in Rome and the Embassy of India in Rome is coordinating and facilitating their safe passage.

HGH testing not imminent for NFL

New York Giants long snapper Zak DeOssie (51).

Howard Simmons/New York Daily News

Giants' union rep Zak DeOssie says an agreement for HGH testing probably won't happen for another two years.

With Major League Baseball poised to take a dramatic step in its long war against performance-enhancing drugs, the NFL is still battling its players union over testing for human growth hormone, something the sides agreed to in principle two years ago. Since then, talks over specifics have dragged on, and the NFL Players? Association has often been painted as a roadblock.

That, said Giants union rep Zak DeOssie, couldn?t be further from the truth.

?That?s a huge misconception,? DeOssie told the Daily News on Sunday. ?We?ll do whatever they need and we are totally on board in giving our blood (for HGH testing). But we need to know that we have the best people testing it, that there?s no false positives.

?These are legitimate concerns with respect to our livelihood, so what?s the harm in us asking for the best and a mutually agreed upon standard??

RELATED: VACCHIANO: GIANTS ARE BETTER OFF WITHOUT BRADSHAW

At the moment there is no agreement on that standard, even though the NFL and the NFLPA included HGH testing in the collective bargaining agreement they signed back in 2011. The two sides have agreed to test every player this summer ? a ?population study? ? to establish a ?normal? level of HGH for NFL players and are ?in active discussions . . . on a full resolution of any remaining issues,? an NFL spokesman said.

One of the issues, the league said, is the ?role? of the population study, which was insisted upon by the NFLPA and has been blasted by some experts as a stall tactic ? including David Howman, the chief of the World Anti-Doping Agency, who called the NFLPA?s position ?extremist? back in March.

DeOssie said the NFLPA is not stalling, but he believes any agreement on testing and discipline ?probably won?t happen for another two years.? He said the union considers HGH testing ?a good thing,? but wants to make sure it?s done the right way and that the players who aren?t using PEDs are protected.

?There?s no room for cheating in this game,? said DeOssie, the Giants? long-snapper and a seven-year veteran. ?And we?re happy we are moving forward. We are also happy that the league has decided to take a sample testing from every single player to get the most accurate blood sample regarding HGH testing for our workforce. Do we think it?s going to happen this year? No. It probably won?t happen for another two years. There?s still a lot more standards out there that have to be established and that we have to mutually agree upon.

RELATED: GIANTS INSIDER: TUNA KEEPS INSPIRING COUGHLIN

?But we?re willing to do whatever tests we need ? as long as it?s fair and the guidelines are clear.?

Several Giants were strongly in favor of HGH testing, but agreed there are details that still need to be worked out.

?I?m all for making the game as clean as possible,? said guard Chris Snee. ?As long as they find the right way. I heard they wanted to do (blood-testing) on game days, and that?s the last thing I want to think about ? getting my blood taken ? on game days. But I?m sure they?ll come up with an agreement. I?m all for making this game clean.?

DeOssie said the back-and-forth on the subject between the NFL and NFLPA is ?just a game we play? and he assured that when it comes to eliminating all PEDs from football, the players are fully on board.

?I don?t feel any push-back from our players about adopting this new HGH testing,? DeOssie said. ?We want it. We want the cheating out of the game.?

Lily Collins: Elle Canada's September 2013 Cover Girl!

Lily Collins graces the September 2013 cover of Elle Canada.

The 24-year-old actress opened up about her upbringing, family, taking the spotlight and Clary Fray. Check it:

On family: ?I?d like to have get-togethers and things at the house ? I?m looking forward to that, being a mom one day. Now that I?m baking and cooking, I can?t wait to share it with kids. I really can?t wait. I want a big family.?

On ?City of Bones?: ?It deals with sexuality, family issues, with a girl trying to find herself and grow up. It deals with a lot of issues that I don?t think young-adult novels have dealt with before. I think she?s an amazing literary heroine for this new generation. I don?t feel that she is this girl that allows herself to sit back and bask in the men in her journey. She is never a victim. She figures out what to do.?

On her childhood and growing up around the industry: ?I?m just alert ? I?m aware. I witnessed a lot through the process of growing up in the industry. I grew up knowing the fine line between keeping things public and private. And that?s a cool thing?to be able to avoid mess-ups early on. My parents really instilled this respect for the arts in me. I?ve always wanted to be grateful and not get jaded, because it can be so easy. I want to keep being surprised by what I get to do.?

CONNECTICUT OPEN GOLF: Curl leads Caron, Shelton's St. Pierre 4 shots back

GOSHEN?? Jeff Curl hasn?t been in this position in five years - sitting on a lead heading into the final round of a golf tournament.

After birdieing his first three holes to take the outright lead at the Connecticut Open, Curl never looked back. He fired his second straight 3-under-par 67 at Torrington Country Club to move to 10-under for the tournament and take a three-shot lead.

?My ball-striking, I feel like I have been doing this all summer. I just haven?t been in a tournament where I can showcase it,? said Curl, an Ellington native.

Curl leads defending champion Jason Caron by three shots and four other golfers (Jim St. Pierre, Tommy McDonagh, Eric Steger and Bill Downes) by four. Curl and Caron will play in the final group at 11:40 a.m.

St. Pierre, a Shelton resident and assistant pro at Redding CC, is having his best effort in the Open since winning it in 2002 at New Haven CC. He made seven birdies en route to a 4-under 68 and a 6-under 138 total. He did it all despite tweaking a recurring back injury on the third hole.

?I played basically 15-16 holes today, so I don?t think it can get any worse,? St. Pierre said.

Mike Ballo Jr. is seventh at 4-under 140 and four more golfers are tied for seventh, but seven shots behind Curl.

Just 15 players are under par for the tournament, including two-time champion Frank Bensel and 2003 winner and Milford resident Steve Sokol, both of whom are at 1-under 143. The cut came at 4-over 148. Among those missing the cut are Cody Paladino, the reigning Connecticut State Amateur champion (149), New Haven CC assistant pro Bill Street (149), former Yale University golfer Jeff Hatten (150), Jerry Courville Jr. (151) and Ivan Lendl (157).

Cory Muller, a Torrington native who now plays out of CC of Darien, also missed the cut by 1. He played both days with Lendl and former PGA Tour winner Ken Green. Continued...

?I knew I had to shoot even par or better today and just didn?t make any birdies,? Muller said. ?The greens were considerably slower today. I?ve been playing the greens for 20 years. Even if your brain sees and knows something, it?s tough to get your body to change what it feels.?

Curl, 34, shot a final-round 65 to come from behind to win the Open in 2007 at Lake of Isles. His last win came in October of 2008 on the EGolf Tarheel Tour.

?If I?ve learned anything in golf, I can?t control what anybody does (today),? Curl said. ?I?m positioned and like the way I?m playing. ... As long as I go do what I need to do, I should be fine.?

Caron had the lead outright early Tuesday when he birdied five of his first 11 holes to get to 7-under for the tournament. The defending champion fired a 66, which included a 50-footer for par on the third hole.

?It was an awesome announcement on the first hole (being recognized as defending champion),? Caron said. ?As soon as they announce it, I?m ready to play golf, I?m ready to get into my zone and just play.?

The 66 included nine 3s on Caron?s scorecard. ?I can?t remember the last time I had nine 3s.?

St. Pierre, 41, said the swing on the third hole ?almost forced him down to one knee? the pain was so bad. Yet he managed to post another under-par round at the club where he was an assistant pro in 2000.

?From that point on, it was just survival,? St. Pierre said.

McDonagh is a two-time Connecticut State Amateur champion (2006 at Torrington CC, and 2011) and Met Amateur winner (2006 and 2008), one of the few players ever to win both twice. He shot a 70 at 6-under 138 through two rounds at the Open.

?It was twice as hard as yesterday,? McDonagh said. ?And the higher you go up (in elevation), the harder (the wind) blows. ... I hit a lot of greens. I didn?t make it too hard on myself.? Continued...

Downes, the head pro at Hampden CC in Hampden, Mass., made five birdies and one bogey to post 68 in his first Open and get into contention for today?s final round.

?I haven?t been in the heat (competition for a title) for a long time,? Downes said. ?It?s right around where I?ve got to be, with a chance if I can get something going. ... I don?t hit it quite as long anymore, but that?s not really a factor out here. You have to place yourself around this golf course.?

Steger, a co-leader in the first round with Curl, shot 71 to be in the group at 6-under.

Bomb threats made on Twitter to female journalists

Police are investigating bomb threats made on Twitter against several female journalists, including Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman.

At 5.50pm on Wednesday Freeman received a tweet from an anonymous user, @98JU98U989, which claimed that a bomb had been placed outside her home and would be detonated at 10.47pm.

She reported it to the Metropolitan police, who told her they were launching an investigation as the threat was an arrestable offence. The police also advised her not to stay at home overnight.

Grace Dent, a columnist for the Independent and former Guardian writer, received the same message as Freeman, which she took a screen grab of. It states: "A BOMB HAS BEEN PLACED OUTSIDE YOUR HOME. IT WILL GO OFF AT EXACTLY 10.47PM ON A TIMER AND TRIGGER DESTROYING EVERYTHING."

Although the user's account was suspended, several other women ? including Catherine Mayer, Europe editor of Time magazine, Sara Lang, a social media manager at American non-profit AARP, and Anna Leszkiewicz, editor of Cherwell, Oxford University's independent student newspaper ? subsequently received identical threats.

The bomb threats come just days after Labour MP Stella Creasy and Caroline Criado-Perez, a feminist campaigner, received threats of rape on Twitter.

Police investigating allegations of harassment against the two women on the website have made two arrests: a 25-year-old man in north-east England and a 21-year-old in the Manchester area.

Freeman said the police who interviewed her about the bomb threat asked whether she was friends with Criado-Perez.

Freeman, whose latest column How to use the internet without being a total loser addressed the issue of misogynistic online abuse, said: "I get loads of abuse on Twitter. That I should just 'go back to the kitchen', or someone saying they can't wait until women lose the vote.

"It's not all from men, some are clearly from women, such as "I'm only a feminist because I can't get a boyfriend, or I must be a lesbian because I'm a feminist. I have had some rape threats too. They're always misspelled."

She said the abuse directed against her had become more angry, intense and misogynistic since the threats against Criado-Perez and Creasy.

"Because of the bomb threat this time I called the police. There was that guy arrested for threatening to blow up an airport. If it's illegal to threaten to bomb an airport, it's illegal to threaten to bomb me."

Freeman said the police had also advised anyone who received a similar threat to report it.

Twitter bosses are to be questioned by MPs about complaints that they have failed to do enough to protect women from users posting violent and abusive threats.

Freeman said Twitter needs to take online abuse and threats more seriously and should introduce more robust ways to deal with them.

"Threatening to bomb and rape people is illegal. We need to apply the law in the same way online as we do in the real world. There should be a button to report abuse more easily. Twitter makes money ? they can afford some moderators."

Del Harvey, Twitter's director for trust and safety, admitted it was not the company's policy to automatically report threatening or abusive messages to police.

The website does not hold information to reveal the location a message has been sent from and therefore cannot identify the correct local police force, Harvey said.

She also revealed she had received messages threatening to rape her on "multiple platforms across multiple sites on the internet", but chose not to prosecute.

Harvey told BBC Radio Five Live: "We don't have that much information about our users compared with other platforms.

"We don't always have that information about where the message came from.

"If somebody called you and said, 'I'm going to come over and beat you up', you don't expect the phone company to contact the police. You certainly expect them to work with police."

The Metropolitan police confirmed they had received "allegations relating to bomb threats sent to a number of females on Twitter". No arrest has been made but inquiries continue.
