OXNARD, Calif. ? Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday he believes troubled wide receiver Dez Bryant's salvation will come on the football field.
Bryant has kept a low profile off the field since his July 16 arrest on a misdemeanor family violence charge. On the field, the third-year pro has grabbed the spotlight with his sparkling play at camp, a fact that's increased Jones' optimism about Bryant turning his life around.
?I know how much football means to him,? Jones said. ?I know what an opportunity he's got. Instincts tell me that that's going to be a big motivator for him.?
Jones said Bryant, 23, is in the best shape he's been in since the Cowboys drafted him in the first round in 2010.
?He's had a lot of injuries in the past, and a lot of times he disappeared at the end of games,? Jones said. ?But that had to do with his conditioning. ... (Now) he's really in top shape. It's exciting to see him make those plays.
?That's why he's got a real opportunity to get his life together because he can make plays like that. And if he can do that, he's got a way to kind of get people to say, ?He was a young guy, made some mistakes, but look at him go now.'?
For now, though, Bryant's margin for error is thin after he was arrested and charged with assaulting his mother.
?He's screwed around here and got his benefit of the doubt collateral down to nothing,? Jones said. ?And he's also very vulnerable. Now you've got to act differently when you're in those shoes. He's got to gain a bunch of that back. He can do it, and he can do it right out on this football field. And I hope he does.?
