Diabetes is devastating both personally and extraordinarily expensive, said Richard Bergenstal, MD, President, Medicine and Science, the American Diabetes Association.But it must be so. Many times the type 2 diabetes and diabetes complications can be avoided. For this reason, the American Diabetes Association is grateful for the First Lady to highlight the epidemic of childhood obesity. The Association has promised to join the campaign and work to stop diabetes before it affects our youth.

The American Diabetes Association prevention initiatives at national, state and local levels. Outreach efforts focus on clinical preventive services such as early detection, prevention services for the community, such as initiatives for education and research funding.

The association also works in communities to provide education to raise awareness for at-risk populations and people with diabetes.
