We have all been there at some stage in our business lives the dreaded negotiation with your most awkward client. He regularly screws you to the floor each year on price and everything else you have to offer! Pretty quickly you see every negotiation as a battle and all your self confidence goes.

There are a lot of myths surrounding negotiating which dont help if you are faced with handling such a situation for the first time. But as with many myths, there is usually a very different reality.

Myth: It can be a daunting ordeal

You mention to your trusted partner or member of staff that you are off to negotiate next years big contract. What do they say? Good luck! The majority of people think that negotiating is a dirty and tough task, a necessary evil.

Reality: Not if you plan

As with all things in life, we fear the unknown, especially if we are unprepared. The reality of negotiating is that with adequate preparation comes confidence. Before your meeting sit down and ask yourself the following questions:

1.What do you want out of this negotiation?

2. What is your lowest, acceptable and best price?

3. What are you prepared to give away if necessary?

4. What do you know about the other companys position in the deal?

5.If you dont know much, what questions can you ask to improve your understanding?
6.Thorough preparation is a great confidence booster. See the negotiation as a presentation and plan your approach and questions before hand.

Myth: Negotiators are born

There is such a mystic surrounding negotiation and the skills needed to be good at it, that most people think you either have it at birth or you dont!

Reality: Negotiators can be made

Like any skill in business, negotiation skills can be learnt and put into practice. There are lots of books, tapes and seminars you can attend on this subject. Negotiation is a structured process and once you understand how it all works the task becomes easier. But as with any new skill you have to practice, practice, practice and this is where most people fall down. Having acquired a new skill you have put in the training but it can be done!

Myth: To strike a deal you have to concede on price

The perception is that many negotiations end up with one of the parties always having to concede on price just to secure the deal.

Reality: There are other items you can concede on

The reality in any negotiation is that price is not always the deciding factor. There is usually something else that the other party wants in addition to, or instead of, a lower price. It could be that they need the product or service quickly and may be prepared to pay a premium for a fast delivery. They may want the product changed slightly to meet their specifications. They may like some on-site support for implementation.

In your research and questioning its up to you to find out what they really want. Dig deep and find it because every part of the deal is negotiable, not just the price. Once you have hit upon it, before conceding on price, throw it into the pot. Remember, this could be something which means very little to you but a lot to them.

Myth: If their first offer is what you want, say yes

After your sales pitch your client comes back and immediately offers exactly what you wanted. Wow, what a great outcome! Hes got what he wants and so do you. Deal done!

Reality: Always counter the first offer

If you accept immediately there are two problems:

1. Your customer will think he has had a bad deal, He accepted straight away! I could have had a much better deal. Im sure I went in too high. With these thoughts going through his mind he wont feel totally happy with the deal and the chance of cancellation or no future business is higher

2. Its likely that this your customers opening bid. Opening bids are usually on the low side and used as a starting point. Accepting now, even if its what you were looking for, could mean you throwing away a higher price

There are instances where the customer will say I dont negotiate. This is the price Im prepared to pay. He has set the rules, so as long as you are happy with the price, go for it!

Myth: Negotiating is a competition with only one winner

If you have a competitive streak this is how you will see a negotiation something to win or lose. Non-competitive people who believe this myth automatically lower their defences and quickly cave in to the stronger player.

Reality: There should be two winners

Negotiation is not a competition. The ideal outcome should be win-win, where both sides feel they achieved something out of the whole process one got a sale at a price he wanted and the other got a purchase at a price he wanted.

Win-win outcomes leave the door open for building strong relationships which will lead to more business in the future. Win-lose outcomes mean that one side will be reluctant to deal again. If, by your very nature, you are a competitive person, temper this and accept the reality that the negotiation process has to have two winners, not just you!

Myth: If you walk away, thats it

You have found the perfect product but you dont get the price or deal you are looking for. However, you are afraid about loosing the opportunity so you decide to go for it anyway, at any price.

Reality: Opportunities often come around again

Accepting a deal through fear is not a position you want to be in. You will always have a nagging doubt that you paid too much or gave away something which you should not have. Be strong enough to walk away from a deal if its not what you are after.

You have to learn to detach yourself from the underlying deal and avoid getting emotionally involved with the product or service. Just concentrate on getting the best result. Being emotionally detached means you can walk away with no doubts. You may find that a few days later the seller will be back banging on your door with another offer. Remember that opportunities always pop up and walking away is not a failure!

So take a fresh look at negotiating. Are you clinging onto old myths about how negotiating should be done? Accept that the reality can be very different!

Old lasso skills used to rescue drowning dogs

MOXEE, Wash.?? At first, Jesus Villanueva thought someone was yelling that two cars had fallen in the irrigation canal. Then he saw what had really happened ? could skills he had learned as a young man on a Mexican cattle ranch help him save the two drowning dogs?

The drama started Wednesday when Noya Deats took her dogs Fawn and Nia for a walk along the Roza Canal, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported. Signs warn people to stay out of the canal, but Deats says the dogs had been let off their leashes there before with no problem.

This time, though, the water was swift, and when the dogs jumped in, they were swept away and couldn't get out.

Deats ran along beside them and called her husband, Matt, and police, the Herald-Republic reported.

After she had run about two miles, her husband arrived, tried to grab the dogs at a canal ladder but missed, the paper said. A Yakima County sheriff's deputy tried to lasso the dogs with a rope but missed.

That's when the chase arrived at the Roy Farms. Villanueva, who speaks only Spanish, was working when he thought he heard someone yell that two cars were in the canal, the Herald-Republic reported.

"I thought, two cars?" Villanueva, 54, told the newspaper through an interpreter.

Then he saw the desperate dog owners and watched the deputy fail to lasso the animals. He asked to see if he could try. Within seconds he lassoed each dog and pulled them in, the newspaper said.

"He just kind of came out of nowhere," Noya Deats said. "It was amazing how fast he lassoed them."

Even Villanueva was surprised. He told the newspaper that he had learned to lasso on a Mexican cattle ranch but it had been 30 years since he had roped anything.

He told the newspaper he was happy to help, especially after seeing how far Noya Deats had run.

As for the owners, they vow to heed warnings to keep their dogs away from irrigation canals.

"We're so happy (Villanueva) came along," Matt Deats said.

I am learning that bullion gold coins are simply the price of gold, at the moment, and that can change daily. I?m also learning that investment-grade gold and silver coins have a numismatic or rarity value.

Where is the very best place to buy the best investment gold coins at the very best prices? I have spoken with so many dealerships online that charge 28% markup on their investment spreads all the way up to 45% markup from the original cost of the coins.

Is there a place where I can save money thereby creating a faster return on my investment?

Which is the better investment, everyone looks at bullion when they think of gold, but I am learning more promising returns on the investment-grade gold and silver coins. Which is better, and why? This seems to be a huge discussion and I haven?t agreed with any of the answers posted on this site as of yet.

Does Travel Insurance Cover You If Can't Get Your Car? ? Travel ...

If you liked my last Blog post Do Callers Think We Were Born Yesterday?, you?ll like this one.

Last Saturday, Aug. 27th, I got a call from a client named Mike stuck in the Caribbean because his flight was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. The earliest he could come back was on Wed. Aug. 30th. I told him not to worry as he?ll be reimbursed up to the daily limit for meals and accommodations. Mike was fine with that as he got to stay in paradise for 3 more days at someone else?s expense.

On Wednesday I got a call from Mike. He was back in the USA. He wanted to be sure his travel insurance would cover a car rental or taxi so he could drive home. He parked at an offsite discount lot and due to the National Guard closing all the roads he couldn?t get to his car. Plus, there was no one available at the lot?s 24 Hour customer service number.

Steve: No, that?s not covered
Mike: I thought this covered me until I got home.
Steve: You?re covered if you?re ill, injured, accommodations & meals if you are delayed, you luggage is stolen or damaged. But not for alternate transportation back home because the car lot is closed.
Mike: If I can?t be covered for everything, it?s a waste of money ? Why even buy travel insurance? ?

Since Mike didn?t react very well when I suggested he have a friend give him a ride home, or as he lives close to the airport, to walk home, I decided not to go through the arithmetic with him for his current trip, but here it is for your benefit:

Policy cost = $98 for 2 people
vs
Extra nights in hotel = at least $400
3 days of meals = at least $200

While I?m not a super genius (though I think I have some geniuses that influence me), I think?s it?s obvious that Mike comes out ahead even if he had to walk home from the airport.

PARIS (AP) ? World community, meet Libya's new leaders. That was the message of an international conference in Paris on Thursday that was short on substance but full of symbolism.

Leaders and envoys from 60 nations and world bodies such as the United Nations met for talks with Libya's rebel-led National Transitional Council to map the country's future after Moammar Gadhafi's ouster. They vowed to free up billions of dollars in frozen assets and offered to help Libya rebuild, while stressing that it is the Libyan people themselves who must lead the way.

World leaders cautioned that while Gadhafi is still at large, the work of war is not yet done ? and the tough slog of nation-building looms after the six-month, NATO-backed rebellion can be formally termed a revolution.

"We cannot afford a failed pariah state on Europe's borders," said British Prime Minister David Cameron, who hosted the conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy. "We will all lose if the Arab Spring gives way to a cynical winter of repression."

Normalcy is far from ensured. Libya is rife with water, gas, and electricity shortages. Weapons pillaged from bombed-out or raided Gadhafi military installations flow through the country and abroad ? possibly to the benefit of Islamic militants in the region. Libya's crucial oil and gas infrastructure, which made it one of Africa's richest nations, has been hobbled.

"They still have a huge hill to climb," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said. "But they are working with the international community to secure both chemical weapons stockpiles as well as conventional weapons. They are taking action against extremism wherever they find it."

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon urged the Security Council to decide quickly on deploying a civilian mission to stabilize Libya. Other leaders at the conference called on the Security Council to take more steps to unfreeze tens of billions of dollars in assets held by Gadhafi's regime that were squirreled away in foreign banks but blocked by a U.N. resolution against him.

Sarkozy said that some $15 billion in frozen assets were being "immediately unblocked," but he did not indicate which countries the money came from. Any such unblocking would need U.N. approval. As of Thursday morning, the U.N. had only approved the unblocking of about $6 billion from banks in the United States, Britain and France.

In a final communique, delegates also urged the U.N. to welcome the National Transitional Council "as the legitimate delegation representing the Libyan people."

For the NTC to be recognized as the government of Libya, the U.N. General Assembly's Credentials Committee must accept its credentials. The committee is expected to meet in the next few weeks.

In exchange, the world leaders pressed NTC leaders to make firm commitments to democracy and transparency. Rebel spokesman Mahmoud Shammam said that the NTC members will not run for office for four years once elections are organized, as a way to ensure completely new leadership.

"We have to make sure that we fulfill our side of the deal," Libyan rebel leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil said. "We must have security in Libya. Tolerance and forgiveness must be promoted. The state of law must be respected."

Gadhafi, who remains in hiding, has vowed never to surrender, and his loyalists continue to fight in several cities. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance's military operation will continue as long as needed to protect civilians.

Libyans at Thursday's meeting expressed concern about the possible use of chemical weapons by Gadhafi supporters, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said. Western government weapons experts, however, believe that loyalist forces no longer have the hardware to deploy the weapons, after repeated NATO-led airstrikes on military targets.

Clinton told Libyan opposition leaders that they must deal with the case of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only person convicted in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. The ailing al-Megrahi was released from prison in Scotland in 2009 on compassionate grounds, then returned to a hero's welcome in Libya.

Al-Megrahi, an ardent Gadhafi supporter, is now reported to be near death at his home in Tripoli.

"He should be behind bars," Clinton said.

Clinton told Jalil and the head of the rebels' acting Cabinet, Mahmoud Jibril, that they would have to "grapple" with the al-Megrahi matter and look for a "just and appropriate response" to American concerns, said U.S. officials who spoke about the private meeting on condition of anonymity.

The State Department said Clinton would not link Libyan cooperation on the issue to U.S. cooperation in unfreezing Libyan assets.

Several countries stepped forward to help Libya stabilize and rebuild.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel ? who kept her country out of the NATO mission ? offered "our experience of a dictator in Germany and how to overcome the past peacefully." She also offered help rebuilding hospitals and transport and a robust police force.

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi pledged Carabinieri paramilitary police to help Libya, its former colony, train police officers and secure borders. Norway's prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, said the oil-rich Nordic country had offered expertise in the oil and gas sector, to help ensure the country's oil wealth is distributed and taxed fairly.

Russia, which had criticized the NATO operation, gave a boost to the meeting by recognizing the rebels as Libya's interim leadership hours before the talks started.

China, a big investor in Libya, agreed at the last minute to send an envoy. Algeria, harboring Gadhafi's wife and three of his children, did, too. But neither moved to recognize the rebels.

Thursday's talks weren't expected to dramatically change the game in Libya, at least not in the short term. They're largely an opportunity for the Libyans to make their case for rebuilding their nation and to gain global support. Many countries are claiming credit for Gadhafi's ouster ? and jockeying to reclaim Libya's oil.

Thursday's meeting formally put an end to the Contact Group on Libya, and transformed it into a "Friends of Libya" group that will hold its next meeting in New York later this month.
